Book Description

April 30, 2011
Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy, published in 2008 to widespread critical and popular acclaim, provided a unique showcase for some of our finest practitioners of dark, disturbing fiction. This much anticipated second volume more than meets the standards set by its predecessor, offering a diverse assortment of stories guaranteed to delight, unsettle, and enthrall. Volume two proper is a full 20,000 words longer than the first installment in the series.

This stellar collection leads off with Joe Hill s dazzling Wolverton Station, in which a predatory businessman travels to England, and to a primal confrontation he could never have imagined. Elsewhere, a number of contributors revisit familiar, well-established themes and settings. Glen Cook s Smelling Danger gives us a brand new chapter in the long-running annals of The Black Company. The Passion of Mother Vajpai is a story of exotic and erotic initiation set against the backdrop of Jay Lake s novel, Green. Kelley Armstrong reenters the Otherworld with Chivalrous, the account of a devious and long-delayed act of revenge.

And there s more, much more, including a hallucinatory portrait of guilt, angst, and drug-fueled violence by Caitlin R. Kiernan, and an affecting reflection on love, death, and acceptance by Steven R. Boyett. These stories, together with first-rate work by the likes of K. J. Parker and Norman Partridge, offer provocative, sometimes visceral entertainment. As this rich, rewarding volume amply demonstrates, the tale of dark fantasy is alive and thriving, and continues to develop in new and unexpected ways.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Subterranean Press founder Schafer follows 2008's Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy with a superb anthology of 11 twisty stories. In Joe Hill's "Wolverton Station," humans and werewolves meet on the commuter trains outside of London. Jay Lake and Shannon Page's "The Passion of Mother Vajpai" is an erotic and poignant story of an apprentice assassin given a difficult task. Kelley Armstrong picks up the werewolf theme in a completely different vein with "Chivalrous," a study of pack mentality. In "A Pulp Called Joe," David Prill digs slyly at the terminology of paper while offering an aching glimpse of the evils of inequality. Finally, K.J. Parker serves up a wonderfully dry, comic, under-achieving, freelance wizard in "A Room with a View." Each tale has an element of the unexpected, playing delightfully on themes of individuality and unsettled outcomes. (Apr.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought for one story, Enjoying Throughout January 22, 2012

Hi! I'm one of those types that like to have all of the stories by her favorite author, so I bought this book for Kelley Armstrong's entry, "Chivalrous". An excellent read, that one, and with the subject matter of the story, even if you've never read anything else from her series "Women of the Otherworld", in which this story is set, you can still enjoy the story!

As for the rest of the book, I'm still reading it, but most of the stories are well-written and nice. All in all, a very good read. (Though, seeing as hwo I bought it for just the one story, I wish I could have found a better price. Amazon was the cheapest I could find).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book July 9, 2011

This really was a great read for me. I bought it because my favorite author Kelley Armstrong wrote Chivalrous for it-which was really amazing, telling the back story of one of her Otherworld characters that is new to the series, giving older readers a snippet of what happened to him, but also opening the doors for new readers.

However I did take the time to read all the other stories too and found some that I really liked. The Passion of Mother Vajpai by Jay Lake and Shannon Page was very out there in a good way and I very much enjoyed the trip. The other story that sticks out in my mind is Vampire Lake by Norman Partridge with its old west feel with a twist of the supernatural it was a very fun read.

All in all I would recommend this book if you can get your hands on it, but I wouldn't say it's totally worth the $40+ that Subterranean Press was asking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kelley Armstrong Rules My Bookshelf! October 18, 2012

Hello all. I mainly bought this book b/c the author Kelley Armstrong has a short story in it. I attended the Fan Expo 2012 in Toronto, Canada and knew ahead of time that she was going to be there. I wanted to bring her entire "Otherworld" series with me so that she could sign them all (success). This book was a small print run and I was very lucky to get my hands on it in time to attend the Fan Expo. The condition was as described and the shipping was fast. No complaints and only my thanks.
