SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE is the twisted tale of the Rosenblads (played by Brandy Little and Trent Haaga). The Rosenblads are your typical american couple, except for the fact that they're a pair of serial-killing cannibals. It's great that they share a common interest, but alas, this doesn't stop them from quarreling over the little annoyances in life. Anyone who is married can...

3.0 out of 5 stars A review from someone who has never been married, November 20, 2005
This review is from: Suburban Nightmare (DVD)
Since I have never been married, a lot of the marrital bickering that goes on between these two psychpaths is not very interesting to me. I watched this movie for the BDSM aspect only. Since most of the action in this movie involves the husbund and wife stabbing, shooting, and otherwise trying to destroy each other, I was disappointed with the it. I would have loved to have seen more scenes like what happens in chapter 4 where the female lead has a scene where she is dominating a young woman she has kept locked in the torture room for three months. She treats her as if she is a dog that she is instilling disipline in. "Kris, The Pet", is shackled to to a wooden pole in the middle of the room, in the dark with a wash rag in her mouth, wearing only her underwear. Kris isn't allowed to to let go of the rag, and untill the command of "release" is given. There is a bowl of water near her, but she is only allowed to drink when the female lead gives her a handfull of water to drink out of her hand.

The other scence that I liked was near the middle of the movie when the husband ties the wife down to the living room table, and then puts a hot clothes iron on her stomach. To keep her from being able to esacpe the pain by passing out, he injects her with amphethemine before putting the iron on her....I realize the character of the daughter was in the movie the add depth to the characters, but it seemed like the writters didn't really know what to do with her. At the end of the movie I was wondering what happened to her, dead or not? A figment of the killers imagination? The figment idea I got from watching the extras.

Anyone who is married can attest to the fact that the things we found endearing or "cute" about our partners in the beginning, tend to become very old in the long run. It's no different for the Rosenblads. They fight over the silliest stuff, like who killed who and what victim would best augment the main course. The poor Rosenblads allow the very murderous pathologies that drew them together to come between them, with disastrous results. Oh yeah, they have a young daughter too. She is much loved by her maniacal parents (in a sociopathic sort of way), but she's also in a lot of danger! Can this little family survive their deadly dysfunction? SN is the blackest of comedies, w/ some social satire and a few gallons of blood for good measure. I found it wickedly funny and pleasantly disturbing. The squeamish might want to avoid the Rosenblad clan at any cost. Bon appetite...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth seeing, August 16, 2007

My wife and I tried, really tried to watch this movie, and it went nowhere. It was probably the biggest disappointment we've seen in years. Boring, and so s-l-o-w you feel like cutting off your own limbs for entertainment. We give this an all toes down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well.... at least it's better than Screaming Dead., April 17, 2005
This review is from: Suburban Nightmare (DVD)
Which isn't saying much. This movie could have been called Living Room Nightmare because that's where 90% of the movie takes place. The only outside scene is the backyard for a five minute dialog.

Basiclly this movie boils down to a cannabilistic husband and wife who are in dire need of a marriage counselor. The wife was pretty hot and I thought it unfortunate she didn't get a nude scene. She reminded me of a girl I worked with at McDonald's who I wanted real bad.

Anyway. These two have flashbacks which are pretty uninteresting as they try to figure out where their marriage went bad. They have a daughter who's supposed to be asleep upstairs, but manages to give plenty of lines. The only other cast is another husband and wife who are poisoned at dinner and a couple of cops who show up later at the door.

This movie is good to watch once, but a second time would be rather dull.

If this was suppose to be a horror movie. IT'S NOT. The only good scene in the entire movie for me was the wrestling / fight scene. I love seeing a woman and a man wrestle especially if the woman is kicking the mans butt. Sadly this movie doesn't have hardly have any of that. There is alot of reminiscing between the couple taking us back in time when times were not so bad between the two of them. I really didn't find that to be useful. When I saw the previews of this DVD I saw the fight scenes and for me that is why I bought the DVD. But it even fails at that.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best from shock-o-rama cinema, October 5, 2004
This review is from: Suburban Nightmare (DVD)
Where screaming dead fell flat suburban nightmare picks up. From the trailer I expected this movie to be a dark spoof of romantic comedies that your girlfriends usually drags you in to watch. I was wrong. The movie has an ultra serious tone. There is some humor now and again but this mostly domestic disturbances to the nth degree. It's a bit of a social statement abou the stresses of marriage and the power struggle between man and wife. The ending is predictable but still leaves you guessing. There are some twists that are revealed during the climax. The dvd also feautures some short films and a music video.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! Much Better than I expected!!!!, July 3, 2004

To tell you the truth, I was expecting just another low budget cheap horror film (which I don't mind), but I was pleasently surprised with the acting, story line and the entire film. It even had twist and turns I didn't expect! And although its a horror, I would catch myself laughing at some of the odd situations this couple would end up in! I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a "not your average horror film" kind of movie!

1.0 out of 5 stars Black comedy at its worst, March 5, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Suburban Nightmare (DVD)
Jon Keyes directed this black-humored and odd black comedy that is not scary or funny but dumb and dull with unlikable characters,a badly written plot, and a very low budget. The movie is very reminiscent to Paul Bartel's Eating Raoul and Bob Balaban's Parents but the movie is a couple that argue about everything and then the wife gets mad and harasses a teenage girl in the basement and then tries to kill her husband as well as the husband trying to kill her. For a low-budget black comedy this is a unwatchable mess with no redeeming values. Despite the title the movie takes place in the couple's dining room, kitchen, and the living room and the front cover has nothing to do with this movie because it is not a slasher flick but a bizarre soap opera-ish movie that looks like a Lifetime movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Henry meets War of the Roses!, June 21, 2004

Wow. I'm a little floored here. First, I'd caught Screaming Dead, thought that was pretty good. This is the second release from the same studio and I really have to say this may well raise the benchmark for direct-to-video horror (Troma and Full Moon may have to deal with a new sheriff in town). I decided to risk my cash on what I thought could be an interesting one joke of a movie, and was very surprised. The cast obviously has some stage work, because the characters they create are not, well, lazy... The Rosenblads are not an easy pair to bring to life, but Trent Haaga (who seems to be groomed up a bit Buscemi-esque) and Brandy Little are entirely believable (ulp!) as... well... just picture Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf done with powertools and cutlery. For those out there wanting to see something that isn't another slasher/dead teenager flick, this one is for you!! One of the year's best for me... Keep up the good work, eicinema!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good job!, December 1, 2004

Congratulations to the Shock o Rama Cinema production company! Suburban Nightmare is an example of independent cinema at its most effective. It is a very low budget, straight to video effort, that was obviously shot in and around somebody's house, yet achieves a lot. It is admittedly an art movie intended for a niche audience, yet the dialogue, story, and acting are arguably better than your typical Hollywood offering. The story describes one long evening in the life of a thirtyish white middle class suburban couple. The wife is a recovering alcoholic who has been on the wagon for over a year since she was involved in a very serious auto accident while driving drunk and which resulted in serious injury to their approximately 10 year old daughter. She very much wants to have another child but the husband isn't too keen on the idea. They argue and fight about this constantly. Their lives are greatly complicated by the fact that they are also thrill killers and ghoulish gourmets who have become accustomed to getting their jollies by murdering people and then occasionally using some select parts of their victims as ingredients in their cuisine. It isn't as corny as that sounds. This movie is a lot like the 70s cult movie Eating Raoul, for those of you who are familiar with it, except that I think that this one is much better. The wife also has strong lesbian tendencies and they have a terrified captive teenage girl which they keep chained nearly naked in the basement that the wife often torments when she is angry. While reasonably attractive, the couple is pretty ordinary. The husband is kind of small and scrawny while the wife is a robust tomboy, so that they are pretty evenly matched physically. This comes into play when their fighting becomes more physical. The action is non-stop like a play and the dialogue is incredibly real. This movie works for me.
