About the Author

Albert Hillel was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, of Iraqi parents. He calls himself an Arabic Jew [or sometimes a Jewish Arab]. An academic scientist by vocation, he has a bachelor's degree from Oxford and a doctorate from the University of Manchester. At heart, he is a Mancunian. He grew up in Manchester and, apart from a couple of years in Pittsburgh PA, has spent his working life in the University's Physics Department. He is also a keen, though not die-hard, Manchester United fan. Of his involvement with foxes, he says, "I succumbed to their allure when they first invaded our neighbourhood in the mid-1980s. The more I see of them, the more I find to respect, and even to admire. They are among our most interesting neighbours - over the years one or two have become close friends." He lives with his wife, Shirley [a potter] in a suburb of Manchester. Their neighbours, both human and vulpine, are not altogether different from the characters in this story.
