slavery was always a brutal businesss in America. there was always resistance to the practice by those who sought to destroy oppression. in Washington DC blacks and whites allied themselves to confront America's holocaust with stunning success and dogged determination and in the end they prevailed. the personalities provide a glimpse into the antebellum District of Columbia social and political environment. students of abolitionist history will find a treasury of anectdotes, facts and descriptions that portend the US Civil War.
