Editorial Reviews

Beneath the fierce commotion on the streets of the Big Apple lies an astonishing network of tunnels, turnstiles and technology. Subway boldly descends into this extraordinary labyrinth to find what really makes the wheels of this underground empire turn. A subterranean control tower houses a startling mix of antique technology side-by-side with the ultra-new. A ride aboard the mysterious "money train" divulges the financial secrets of the system. Experimental cars, subway disasters, construction miracles, greedy financiers they're all part of the brute legend of the world's largest subway system. Hop aboard!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Story Of The NYC Subway System, January 26, 2005
By
G. Reid (Roseland, NJ) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Subway: Empire Beneath New York's Streets [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The 1904 grand opening was photographed by Edison's photographer and the footage is in the video. The original subway line was only 9 miles long. Today, the subway is 238 miles in length. The subway system has 300,000 seats moving at one time during peak periods. A lot more can be handled since the majority of subway riders stand during peak periods.

This video also covers the rapid transit systems in NYC prior to the subway including the elevated railways and the pneumatic tubes.
