A Wonderful Collection of Stories!,

This review is from: Subway Stories [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The first time I saw "Subway Stories" on HBO, it totally blew me away. The whole concept behind the film was to compile the winning short stories from a contest (all of the stories had to be connected to the subways of New York). While the stories are diverse in their plots and themes, I couldn't help but be glued to the TV anticipating the next story. There is something there for everyone. I was particularly fond of John Guare's segment about the war vet pan-handling on the train, although all of the stories were much better than average. My only problem with this movie is that it is not yet available on DVD. IF you haven't seen this and are a fan of short stories, you will love this movie.

This is a beautiful series of stories. I highly recommend the video for anyone who is a student of human nature. The contrast of the cold and often harsh New York subway vs. human goodness and strength of character is riveting. Watch it, you won't be dissapointed!

John Rocker can't ride the subway, but i will,
This review is from: Subway Stories [VHS] (VHS Tape)
when i lived in maine, i was only 6 hours from NYC, and i made a habit to go to the big city whenever i could. I always rode the subway. some people may think it's crazy, but i have always been fascinated by them.the last time i was there, i rode one from greenwich village to queens at 130 in the morning and became dazzled by the wonder of gotham. This movie will leave you dazzled by the the variety of the themes presented her., from a snooty rich woman who gets locked in the subway and has to stay there over night, ending up acting like a homeless person. to the old man on the train who gives stock tips to a young trade, these stories tell people more about new york city than any travel giude could. my favorite is the one featuring rosie perez who flirts with a married man on the train

I saw this movie on HBO a couple of years ago, and I have been trying to find it on DVD for a couple of months now, I finally found it on VHS and bought it anyway, cause I just had to have it. The story with Taral Hicks is my favorite, she is trying to reach her mother who is dying in the hospital. She gets stuck and eventually she ends up having to call her from the subway station. When she gets a hold of her mother she sings here favorite song to her over the phone, the song is Troubles of the World. That girl sings the mess out of that song, it will bring tears to your eyes. If you have not seen this movie, you really should.

Like many others, I caught this on HBO and have it on VHS. Unfortunately it is showing signs of wear having seen it so many times and lending it out to friends. Please - someone remaster this and get it out on dvd. Also, if it was originally framed in widescreen (the film switches from a 1:33:1 aspect to 1.66:1 just before the end credits - which play really cool - begin), RELEASE it in widescreen. This is a great film, not unlike "13 Conversations About One Thing".

I saw this movie a couple of times on HBO and was completely awed by it each time. The woman singing on the phone with a sax player and a jewish rabbi chiming in gave me goosebumps. I have been watching for the DVD to come out for years but it doesn't look like anyone is planning to release it.I highly recommend this movie.

This was really good from what I recall. I saw this when I was younger on HBO and I remember Taral Hicks singing on the phone. This has stuck in my mind for years and I would love to purchase, but it is on VHS. Like others, I don't want to buy it on VHS either. Hopefully, I can find a rental just to refresh my memory.

Excellent! The Subway as a stage,
By Axel Big "architect" (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Subway Stories [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I just came across this movie a few weeks ago and found it quite inspiring. The various directors have taken the meaning of how performative mundane activities can become in settings such as the subway. The subway therefore, becomes a stage for various unintended performances. As a foreigner, and having lived in New York for a couple months, I found this representation very poetic and inspiring. If you are a pessimist and are trying to survive in a large city, I recommend this film....As everyone else reviewing this movie, we want it in DVD..!!!!

I watched most of this while in a motel. This movie is incredible. It's very interesting and entertaining. It's one of those movies that makes you think and makes you laugh and the music by Mecca Bodega is spectacular. If you don't already own this I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it.
