4.0 out of 5 stars Catchy turn-of-the-70s influenced modern pop, November 28, 2009
This review is from: Succeed 101 (MP3 Download)
After the heaviness of Sobriety Kills and the stark despair of his Mayfly EP, Jason Karaban's latest single, "Succeed 101," spends its turn-of-the-70s pop sounds on something brighter. This could remind you more than ever of the mood Nick Heyward created on From Monday to Sunday (with perhaps a hint of the ebullience of Polyphonic Spree's "Light & Day"), though the use of a tuba makes me wonder if Karaban borrowed an instrumentalist from Sgt. Pepper's band to help with the backing. The lyrics may be taken as the triumph of positive thinking over depression, though the line "Friday I shot so high / Nothing seemed to be impossible" could be taken either as either figurative or unfortunately literal. Either way it's a snappy piece of retro pop that will help tide you over until next year's release of the full EP Just Enough, Just in Case. [©2009 hyperbolium dot com]
