Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

The Web 2.0 innovation LinkedIn (www.lindedin.com) has gained huge popularity as a professional networking tool and is often considered the key to success for businesspeople and job seekers today. In fact, all Fortune 500 companies are already part of this service. Butow (CEO, Butow Communications Group) and Taylor (cofounder, TalentPlanet) show how to use LinkedIn strategically to communicate and to gain competitive advantage. The 12 chapters supply detailed and practical instructions for functions such as registration, profile creation, and the management of contacts, leads, and recommendations. In addition, members are offered guidance about proper business etiquette and for using LinkedIn to its full potential, especially with regard to recruitment, job seeking, and business intelligence. Unfortunately, the many screenshots contained in the text are too small and, therefore, virtually unreadable. Nevertheless, this informative text is well written; because of its value to business and human resources professionals and to individuals developing their careers, it is recommended for all academic and public collections.—Caroline Geck, MLS, MBA, Somerset, NJ

Not bad, but very basic and filled with stuff you might have easily figured out on your own just by using LinkedIn.

It helped me very much with refining my profile and discovering very useful tools to gain employment.

Not bad, but very basic and filled with stuff you might have easily figured out on your own just by using LinkedIn. I was hoping there would be more content on how to really leverage LinkedIn to develop your business, harnessing it as a tool for getting customers, building a brand, etc. Those themes are very lightly touched on.

Heavy users of LinkedIn will likely find this pabulum.

I did, at least ... Your mileage may vary....

As a recent subscriber to LinkedIn, I wanted a tutorial book on how to use LinkedIn and how to use it for networking. Eric Butow knows how LinkedIn works and Kathleen Taylor knows about networking. The combination could have produced an excellent book. The problem I had with this book is for a tutorial, you want to read the text and then look at the screen shots to see what the author was talking about. The screen shots are sooooooo small that you can hardly read the text. This made it very difficult to read and I finally had to go online at LinkedIn to see what the author was refering to.

The context of the book is good, but the format is poor. I would skip this book and look for another. Very disappointed in this American Management Association publication.

Book is a primer for how to NAVIGATE LinkedIn, not how to succeed in business with it. Very misleading. Not helpful to me at all.

This book is a must-have for anyone serious about building a network of professional contacts. I bought this book because I wanted to use it for my money management firm by expanding my professional network but did not want to waste time trying to learn all the little tricks myself from scratch. This book is a shortcut on how to quickly set up a profile, connect with other users, search for people, and so on. I am a firm believer of not reinventing the wheel.

The problem with books on social media sites - the text becomes quickly outdated long before the book hit the shelves. I found this book at our local library. However, comparing screen shots and information, most everything is far outdated. This book can be used as a quick once over, skimming for a few tidbits, but generally is not worth much time, in today's 2013 / 2014 LinkedIn realm.

This book offers tips/tricks on utilizing LinkedIn for maximum social networking. The last chapter I enjoyed, as it has the strenghths and weaknesses of LinkedIn as well as some other networking sites. It takes you through Spock, Jigsaw, Plaxo, Illumio, etc. and has some really good general information as an introduction to these newer sites. It shows how these sites can be utilized in lieu of, in some instances or in combination with LinkedIn for maximum exposure and connect ability. Also the prices of the other sites, strengths and weaknesses and some valuable tips for new users.

Some information I can utilize straight away in my current position, some I will in the future and some may just lead to other avenues that will strengthen my recruiting and social networking en devours. A very useful read and I feel it could translate to many professionals looking to get more knowledge in today's Social Networking.

LinkedIn, one of the Internet's top, business-oriented social networking sites, focuses on helping people build their professional connections for fun and profit. Authors Eric Butow and Kathleen Taylor provide detailed steps on how to use every feature, big and small, on the site. Supporting their instructions with numerous, helpful screen shots, they clearly explain how to exchange references, promote your company, set up a home page, look for employment, recruit new employees, establish and maintain your business network, and more. The book's disadvantage is that Web site logistics change in an instant; its advantage is that it offers the immediate, hands-on information people want so they can create stronger networks. getAbstract reports that beginning networkers who want basic (actually, very basic), detailed instructions for using LinkedIn can link up here to get exactly what they need to know.

This is one of the more detailed and truly in-depth tutorials on this great business networking site. It does much more than just present obvious functionality, which anyone could do by merely spending some time on the site. Instead, it takes the reader by the hand and shows you how to leverage LinkedIn as a real business tool. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to further their competitive edge in these challenging times.
