This book is a must-have for anyone serious about building a network of professional contacts. Not bad, but very basic and filled with stuff you might have easily figured out on your own just by using LinkedIn. I was hoping there would be more content on how to really leverage LinkedIn to develop your business, harnessing it as a tool for getting customers, building a brand, etc. Those themes are very lightly touched on.

Heavy users of LinkedIn will likely find this pabulum.

I did, at least ... Your mileage may vary....

1.0 out of 5 stars Title misleading, February 7, 2009
This review is from: How to Succeed in Business Using LinkedIn: Making Connections and Capturing Opportunities on the World's #1 Business Networking Site (Paperback)
Book is a primer for how to NAVIGATE LinkedIn, not how to succeed in business with it. Very misleading. Not helpful to me at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy New Glasses Before Reading This Book, October 15, 2008
This review is from: How to Succeed in Business Using LinkedIn: Making Connections and Capturing Opportunities on the World's #1 Business Networking Site (Paperback)
As a recent subscriber to LinkedIn, I wanted a tutorial book on how to use LinkedIn and how to use it for networking. Eric Butow knows how LinkedIn works and Kathleen Taylor knows about networking. The combination could have produced an excellent book. The problem I had with this book is for a tutorial, you want to read the text and then look at the screen shots to see what the author was talking about. The screen shots are sooooooo small that you can hardly read the text. This made it very difficult to read and I finally had to go online at LinkedIn to see what the author was refering to.

The context of the book is good, but the format is poor. I would skip this book and look for another. Very disappointed in this American Management Association publication.

4.0 out of 5 stars Berglund Center for Internet Studies Review by Jeffrey Barlow, April 19, 2011
This review is from: How to Succeed in Business Using LinkedIn: Making Connections and Capturing Opportunities on the World's #1 Business Networking Site (Paperback)
Perhaps one of the best things that a reviewer might say about a new book is that it made him or her realize that he had neglected an important resource to better employ the World Wide Web for that which it is best used, as a tool for building communities and connections. Butow and Taylor's How to Succeed in Business with LinkedIn is such a book. The primary utility of this book will be for the business user. Almost all of the tools of LinkedIn are explored for their immediate business potential. This treatment of LinkedIn sometimes makes the application seem like a Darwinian electronic jungle where every creature in the ecosystem is seeking some evolutionary advantage. However, this is the obvious intention of the application and the authors are refreshingly direct about that purpose. And LinkedIn is clearly the most useful weapon in that particular jungle....

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Tutorial; Bad Grammar, January 12, 2010
By
This review is from: How to Succeed in Business Using LinkedIn: Making Connections and Capturing Opportunities on the World's #1 Business Networking Site (Paperback)
I was struck by the bad grammar in this book and the amount of typographical errors. It appeared that the book was rushed into publication because editors didn't catch the mistakes. The tutorials aren't bad and one can certainly learn from this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for a Beginner at Social Networking, January 3, 2010
This review is from: How to Succeed in Business Using LinkedIn: Making Connections and Capturing Opportunities on the World's #1 Business Networking Site (Paperback)
This book offers tips/tricks on utilizing LinkedIn for maximum social networking. The last chapter I enjoyed, as it has the strenghths and weaknesses of LinkedIn as well as some other networking sites. It takes you through Spock, Jigsaw, Plaxo, Illumio, etc. and has some really good general information as an introduction to these newer sites. It shows how these sites can be utilized in lieu of, in some instances or in combination with LinkedIn for maximum exposure and connect ability. Also the prices of the other sites, strengths and weaknesses and some valuable tips for new users.

Some information I can utilize straight away in my current position, some I will in the future and some may just lead to other avenues that will strengthen my recruiting and social networking en devours. A very useful read and I feel it could translate to many professionals looking to get more knowledge in today's Social Networking.

I was hoping to get a tutorial for how to set up a profile as well as some insights about how to maximize LinkedIn. I found a disconnect between what I saw on the screen in my LinkedIn account and those displayed in the book. I eventually gave up and just read the text which included a few helpful tips along the way.

This book is a treasure trove of information and tips on how to make LinkedIn more than a professional "Facebook." What I found particularly valuable and timely were the sections on how to find jobs, *sell* yourself to prospective employers and tap your network for job leads and referrals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful how-tos on linking up with your network, February 27, 2009
This review is from: How to Succeed in Business Using LinkedIn: Making Connections and Capturing Opportunities on the World's #1 Business Networking Site (Paperback)
LinkedIn, one of the Internet's top, business-oriented social networking sites, focuses on helping people build their professional connections for fun and profit. Authors Eric Butow and Kathleen Taylor provide detailed steps on how to use every feature, big and small, on the site. Supporting their instructions with numerous, helpful screen shots, they clearly explain how to exchange references, promote your company, set up a home page, look for employment, recruit new employees, establish and maintain your business network, and more. The book's disadvantage is that Web site logistics change in an instant; its advantage is that it offers the immediate, hands-on information people want so they can create stronger networks. getAbstract reports that beginning networkers who want basic (actually, very basic), detailed instructions for using LinkedIn can link up here to get exactly what they need to know.
