An Excellent Resource,
By Edgar Enriquez (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Succeeding In America (Paperback)
The book should be the first investment any immigrant should make after setting foot in the land of opportunity. It has everything an immigrant needs, from practical experiences and advice by successful immigrants, to the how-to's and where-is's of America. The book definitely saves a lot of preparation time for a would be immigrant who is about to travel to the States. It greatly reduces the anxiety to be experienced by a newcomer in wondering what to do or where to go for support while in America. For those who are already in the States, the book also serves as an inspiring reference to continue achieving the dream. Inasmuch as it is very easy to read, the book is indeed a very practical guide. On the overall, the book is very easy to read. I have finished reading it in less than three hours. The author uses words that are easily understandable by readers. While I did find a lot of practical and serious experiences given by the contributors, I really cannot recall having read some anecdotes. In my personal opinion, I believe that those light-hearted, funny experiences by any immigrant is worth writing. It adds a sense that "it's not all that diffucult being an immigrant in the States". Although I undertand that the book has its own specific theme to portray, so probably, inserting anecdotes is not suitable. Also, I think a non-immigrant American will benefit from this book as well because it provides a view of what's inside an immigrants mind: why they choose to settle in the States, the difficulties in adjusting to the American culture, and the challenges that immigrants have to face. It would help Americans to understand the immigrants better. I specifically liked the insertion of practical experiences of the contributors for each relevant or important topic. This enables the readers to easily relate to what the author is talking about. I like the topic that itemizes the obstacles an immigrant will face and how to conquer these hurdles. I also like the author's selection of contributors. They are the down-to-earth, hard-working immigrants. Readers could easily relate to them as the contributors are not the "elite, arrogant,or rich-and-famous immigrants", but the "hard-workers just like us" type of people. Congratulations!

A great resource, not only for immigrants, but for anyone!,
By Patricia Tsouras (Alexandria, VA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Succeeding In America (Paperback)
This book is filled with practical information for anyone starting out in a career or changing careers. It addresses everything from how to make a positive impression in an interview to finding emotional support as you try to achieve your goals. It is certainly a tremendous resource for newcomers to the U.S., containing guidance on cultural differences and workplace attitudes, but it would also be a valuable guide to anyone, immigrant or native, seeking career success in the U.S. It should be a standard refernce in high school guidance offices.

So Practical,
By Edward Gekosky (Woodbridge, Va United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Succeeding In America (Paperback)
This should be a real aid to all thinking of coming to America, and those that are here that have yet to Succeed. Straightforward, easy to follow. A good accumulation of necessary information. It is written from the vantage point that hard work pays off, and education helps bring about financial success. These are powerful messages that mirror much in the American spirit toward success. I wrestled a bit with the definition of "success" as I read the book. I would like to see the sequel add an early discussion that "The Pursuit of Happiness" is every bit as important in America as achieving education, power, and/or financial success. That point aside, this book is of great value for anyone wanting to work toward success in the USA. And achieving educationally, financially, etc. certainly helps provide many of the necessaary options to pursue happiness.

Not worth the money...,
By Andy Brandt (Poland for now) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Succeeding In America (Paperback)
Advice in this book is trivial (like: learn English, study in US if possible to have local education, make friends once in the US) and to some extent outdated - author arrived to the US in the early 70-ties as did most of people she talked with.

Though I have not yet read the last few pages of "Succeeding in America", I have progressed far enough to realize that this book is highly informative for prospective as well as new US immigrants. I am sure that many others who have read this book have learned as much as I have from the author's detailed insight on how to achieve the American dream.I congratulate Leticia Gallares-Japzon on her superb command of the subject and the excellent format in which she presented the materials. This book must be included in the catalogues of city libraries.

A review of an Immigrants Husband,
By J.C. Bray (San Diego, CA, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Succeeding In America (Paperback)
SUCCEEDING IN AMERICAAs the husband of a Filipino immigrant, I would like to commend the author of this very informative book for taking the time to compile all of this data, formulate the message in understanding terms and most important, backing up the writing with supporting stories from other succeeding new comers to America. Today's people coming to these United States can surely reap their rewards after reading and applying the words presented by the successful author and writer of this book. I would like to see flyers distributed, similar to the flyer that was sent out with the book, requesting other successful immigrants to tell their success stories. The author's next book could capture these new stories as Part I, II and etc to the original book and I can visualize these writings becoming very interesting and successful stories for the moviemakers of America. Looking forward to seeing the many writings from these stories. Thank you Letty Japzon Sincerely J.C. Bray |
