5.0 out of 5 stars Busy Parents BUY
Natalie Gahrmann's advice is seasoned, rooted in reality, and written to inspire change for the better. This will be one of those books that you turn to for a major life overhaul, and one you return to again and again for quick ten minute tune ups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for Parents Only, January 20, 2003

This review is from: Succeeding as a Super Busy Parent: 75 Practical Tips for Life, Love, Kids, & Career (Paperback)
Although I am a non-parent, most of the people I work with and manage are
parents. I read this book to increase my awareness of their daily toils and tribulations. In this respect, the book admirably served its purpose. However, I found much of the information in this book applicable not to parents only but to anyone who goes to work every day. This book offers advice on how to define success in one's own terms as well as down-to-earth information on such topics as day care. The organization of the book, in 75 "tips", each of which consists of a quotation, exercises for self-assessment and recommended resources and activities, makes the information readily accessible. I'm going to keep this book of abundant advice at my fingertips, using it to put some strategic planning into my own daily routine as well as using it as a guide to advise my colleagues. I am happily recommending it.

This review is from: Succeeding as a Super Busy Parent: 75 Practical Tips for Life, Love, Kids, & Career (Paperback)
The subtitle of this book is 75 Practical Tips for Balancing Life, Love, Kids, and Career, and the book is written as a manual--a how-to-do-it book. One of the unique features of this book is that it is all encompassing, covering all phases and stages of o person's life. This ranges from Personal Wellness, Family Time, and Working Mothers, all the way to Professional Skills. The book is more than one to be bought and put on the kitchen shelf--it is a worthwhile investment for any parent to buy and then to read and use to find success as a parent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Psychobabble, not practical time savers and not for parents, November 18, 2004

My wife and I both work and we have twin toddlers and an 8 year old. This book has very little practical advice for me or anyone else who is a busy parent. My advice for busy parents is to not buy this book. It is mostly feel good about me blather. The most important advice for really busy parents is to get help with the chores or babysitting/nannies, this is not even in the book. Instead, it appears to be a repackaged set of DIY therapy ideas.

Let me give you some examples:

Tip #15 is "reaffirm your sense of worth". The book goes on to state that I should write in my journal about what I need to do right now to raise my self-esteem. Well, busy people don't have journals. And my self esteem is not a time consuming issue.

Tip #23 is "say what you mean". Here you are supposed to be clear and honest and this will help your relationships. Also not relevant to being busy.

Tip #48, embrace diversity, is great advice in a work hiring conversation, but irrelevant to a busy parent.

Tip #51 is conquer the challenges of work and family, where you are advised to do things like keep a healthy perspective and have a positive attitude.

Tip #64 is survive a layoff. Not part of being a super busy parent as there is not a single point on these pages about being a parent. Actually I would think that being laid off would make things a little easier by freeing up some time during the day, this would be your chance to spend time with your family.

My favorite is tip #25 "gain financial freedom", which will enable me to be free of financial concerns. This is just preposterous.

My suggestion for busy parents is to not buy or read this 207 page book. It's just not helpful.
