Book Description

October 2, 2008
Succeeding at SaaS: Computing in the Cloud is both an overview of the SaaS market and a series of recommendations for ISVs, platform vendors, and customers who want to participate in it. The centerpiece of the book is 22 interviews Wohl conducted with these market participants, illustrating the state of the SaaS market and its direction. Author Amy Wohl has been following the SaaS market since its inception (as the earlier ASP market) in the late 90's and she has filled the book with advice based on her consulting practice and her observations of the industry. The book includes both a brief history of the market and its precedents, a definition of cloud computing and its relationship to SaaS, and a discussion of their likely futures.

1.0 out of 5 stars the worst book I have ever purchased in my life, April 2, 2009

I have bought hundreds of books in my lifetime and this one has to be ranked #1 for "books I wish I never bought".

I bought this book because I am a developer and entrepreneur and thought it would give me some insight into what I should and shouldn't do. This book says nothing about either. In fact, it reads like a 6th grader took a Wikipedia article on SaaS and tried to expand it into a book. I think the former provides more value and insight.

This is obviously a self published book because it has LuLu written on the outside of the book and I can not see how a real publisher would see this book as anything other than a joke.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Informative Overview of Dynamic Technologies, July 30, 2009
This review is from: Succeeding at SaaS: Computing in the Cloud (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading "Succeeding at SaaS" and am citing it as a source for my second book, as well as the second edition of my first. I had certainly heard about cloud computing, SaaS, and PaaS before picking it this book. I know a great deal more about these topics than I did before.

Wohl does a nice job of explaining the theory behind SaaS and clouds while concurrently using real-world examples. I learned quite a bit about the different SaaS pricing models and specific offerings. I felt that the book's strongest points surrounded the challenges that SaaS creates for traditional software vendors and organizations already using on-premise software. How do they adapt? What are the options? Wohl provides a balanced account of the benefits of SaaS without blindly endorsing it as a panacea for every type of IT issue. Finally, the book enumerates hybrid approaches for organizations with legitimate security concerns related to SaaS and third-party clouds.
