Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Tracy (Maximum Achievement and Advanced Selling Strategies) presents his thoughts about success and personal development in a form as old as literature itself: a man goes on a journey, and readers discover what he learns along the way. In this case the journey is a trip to Africa Tracy undertook with two friends when he was 21. But while Tracy provides a roadmap of the lessons he wants a reader to remember (the secret to accomplishing your goal is having a plan; you should never be deterred; etc.), the details get confusing. For one thing, you are never quite sure where Tracy started from or exactly how and why he traveled as he did. (The trip seems to have started from England, although Tracy was apparently raised in Canada.) And while some of the advice is sound ("People will often encourage you in a risky venture as long as it means nothing to them... the acid test is to invite them to invest their own money"), much of it is contradictory. We are told at various times that the secret to success is to keep plunging ahead, to wait and do nothing and to pace yourself. More worrisome, an overarching theme to achieving what you want seems to be "leap and the net will appear." While the details of the trip can be mildly engaging, the reader's journey would have been far smoother here if as much hard work had been put into ferreting out the inconsistencies and contradictions of the text as in trying to reach Africa. $100,000 ad/promo; author tour. 3.0 out of 5 stars The journey ends before success, September 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Success Is a Journey: Making Your Life a Grand Adventure (Hardcover)
A devotee of Brian Tracey, I jumped at the opportunity to read this book on success. Unfortunately, the journey ends before he succeeds contrary to the title. After spending half the book getting on the journey and into Africa, Tracy then spends the other half of the book crossing the Sahara desert. The book ends abruptly! You do not finish the journey. I was left wondering about the "end game" of success. Maybe Brian will write another book describing the end of the journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, June 19, 2000
This is one of Brian Tracy's best literary achievements! Based on his real life experiences, "Success is a Journey" is an often harrowing story of triumph over adversity on the road to goal achievement. As Brian says, you can have most anything you want in life if you focus on it as a goal and are willing to pay the price to get it. This book demonstrates vividly that most goals in life are attainable and if we deem them to be out of our reach, we are often engaging a condition of mindset, not based in reality. Once this simple fact is fully understood, you can rise to almost any challenge. This is a tremendously uplifiting piece of work that I would heartily recommend to anyone with a dream. Brian Tracy has certainly been a source of inspiration for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was a little disappointed., May 4, 1999
This review is from: Success Is a Journey: Making Your Life a Grand Adventure (Hardcover)
I have read all of Brian's books, I have listened to most of his tapes, and attended several of his seminars here in Seattle. I got less out of this book than I have his other material. This book might be better for those who are getting their first look at Brian's message. Overall, I think Brian is the greatest self-helper in the game. I credit Brian for so many of my accomplishments and personal growth, however at $30.00 for the hardback, this book came up short for me.
