According to Dr. Steven Berglas, success is the ultimate self-fulfillment and should be a gratifying and enriching experience. But for many success is a two-edged sword, a burden as well as a blessing. He explains why the highly successful may 'self-handicap' themselves rather than face the rising expectations imposed on them from within and without.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, July 24, 2003

I have read probably 500 psychological/self-help books. This one was referred to in a Maxwell book on leadership, and I got a used one... it's been out of print for a while.

This is a phenomenal book, it's almost been a process for me reading it. Seldomly do you find a book that so precisely addresses the deeper issues around being enormously successful. This book made clear for me things I've pondered for 15 years.

Steven Berglas, if you're reading this, I think you should seriously consider revising the book for this decade, and re-releasing it. It is as relevant as it was when you wrote it, perhaps even more so.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good old book worth rereading, June 14, 2011

This review is from: The Success Syndrome (Hardcover)
This is outdated but a basic book, dealing with the phenomenon of after-state of success. If you are interested in affairs of Tiger Woods or some crazy celebrities, this book will give you some ideas why they do such silly things. More importantly I began to ponder (so many years after reading it), if United States is in a kind of success syndrome. Or is the enlightment (science, technology, capitalism or combination of these) made a successful world, which now enters a state of great stagnation (see book by Typer Cowen)?
