Essential reading for adopting parents-to-be,
By
This review is from: Successful Adoption: A Guide for Christian Families (Paperback)
My husband and I are adopting a toddler from our state's foster care system and I looked everywhere for a book that included adopting out of foster care. It seems like all the adoption books out there are outdated and geared towards the international or domestic infant adoptive parents and I could not find one that encompassed are adoption scenario. I was extremely excited to find this book-Christian to boot!-had just come out. It is very thorough for EVERY situation-even going into parenting after the child arrives home in each given adoption type.
I absolutely loved the brief testimonies, bible quotes, and quick facts that were upbeat and comforting. There are sample letters for fundraising, for caretakers/birthparents, family-even a sample letter for an adoption announcement to send to families. There are relevant websites, local/state/country contact information, support group listings, etc I was actually relieved and comforted by the section on how to afford adoption and the differant subsidies, grants, tax credits, and loans available. This book is so easy to read-not at all intimidating and is invaluable in it's Christian perspective. I could not believe how much foster care adoption information and tips were available! Whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone looking for wisdom, comfort, and answers!

Awesome Resource!,

We are currently in the process of adopting our twin girls from Guatemala. I wish I would have had this book to read before we started the adoption process. This book was an awesome resource on international, domestic, and foster/adoption. Tons of information and yet very personal. Wonderful stories of adoption miracles. The best part is getting that Christian perspective which is so incredibly important with any and all aspects of our lives. I am going to purchase a few extra copies of this book to have handy for any family, friends, neighbors, or even stragers that would like to read more on adoption today.

I first heard about this book on a program on Christian radio. My husband and I have always felt a calling on our hearts to adopt a child one day, and I had heard this is a comprehensive resource that helps walk you through the entire process. We currently have two children, one a baby, so adoption is down the road for us....but I know that this book will be a wonderful guide as we head down the road to adoption. Ms. Gillespie is very knowledgable about the process and she shares things she has learned through her own adoption experience. This is a MUST-HAVE for anyone even considering adoption.

This book is 300% better than the first adoption book I chose to learn about this delicate subject. It has helped tremendously in reconciling feelings about adoption and my faith, as well as provide useful information in a very clear presentation. A must-read for anyone considering adoption!

We are currently adopting domestically through the foster system. Not only was this book incredibly informative, but it was so encouraging. It had equal information for every kind of adoption process. It is written by an adoptive mother. She also finishes each chapter with a special story written by celebs, and everyday people about their particular experience with adoption. I am recommending this book to anyone even considering adoption!

This is an excellent adoption book to read as you start your adoption journey. It covers both domestic and international adoptions as well as a helpful guide to grants for adoptions. I especially like the examples of successful adoptions including the one from Sam Brownback!

A must buy for any Christian Interested in adoption!,
This review is from: Successful Adoption: A Guide for Christian Families (Paperback)
I have been researching adoption for years now and I must say this book takes the cake as far as covering all types, and nearly every consern is hit on. Their are not a lot of adoption guide books that are writen with the Christian reader in mind and this one is the best I have read so far. It helped me personally with a lot of issues/conserns I had with adoption, foster care adoption specifically, and I would suggest anyone who is even considering adopting anytime in the future to pick it up 100%. It was well worth it.

When I got this book in the mail, I opened it up and immediately began to read it. Within 24 hours, I was finishing it up and browsing through the appendixes. It is very inviting and easy to read.
I like the Christian slant and the accompanying scriptures throughout, but if you wouldn't, don't buy it. I also like the way the author compares adopting a child to God adopting us in His family. We may not be the easiest people in the world to deal with, but He dealt with us and, if called, we should deal with the process of adopting and our child's particular needs. This book cover "domestic adoption" (of a baby, within the USA), international adoption (of babies or children), and adoption of waiting children (in state protective custody.) I was happy to see it covered all three processes, though, with waiting children, there wasn't a lot of information because the rules vary so much from state to state. In the back, there are very helpful lists of resources (websites for more info, grants/loans for financing an adoption, organizations for support, etc) and also sample documents including a complete home study sample. (I was very curious to find out what a home study looks like!) This would be an excellent book to start with, if you or someone you know are considering or even thinking about adoption. It would be helpful not only to someone considering it themselves, but also to friends and family of someone adopting. I'm going to give this book to our public library so other people can benefit from it! :) |
