More About the Author

Founder of BI Scorecard, an independent analyst firm focused on helping customers select BI tools and manage their BI portfolio. We publish side-by-side evaluations based on exclusive hands-on testing. I teach for TDWI (The Data Warehousing Insitute) and contribute to Information Week.

I grew up in NJ and MD and moved to Switzerland where I first began my career in BI in the early 1990s. Giving into the frustration of trying to build a BI application for income statement analysis that I didn't understand, I earned my MBA at Rice University in Houston, TX.

The key difference between the Kindle and hard cover version is the Kindle version's images are in color.

This is a newer edition from her 2007 book Successful Business Intelligence: Secrets to Making BI a Killer App

Back in 2007 agile BI was a hot topic, along with master data management and operational business intelligence. In this newer version cloud, big data, mobile BI are the newer topics while agile continues to be a hot topic. Cindi has updated the survey results in this book as well. Other topics covered include open-source BI and databases, something I had not considered. She has updated the agile portion of the book to include scrum methods and sprints and how they work.

What is especially interesting is all the customer case stories, crossing industries and BI vendors. They include Netflix, Medtronic, FlightStats, the Dow Chemical Company, Macy's and more. Each company is trying to solve a different problem with Business Intelligence. Medtronic is an SAP customer, while Macy's is using a combination of SAP BusinessObjects and Tableau.

She goes into depth discussing the business-IT partnership of BI, and the personality types associated with each. It was interesting to me to see the Meyers-Briggs personality test covered, as introverts are generally with IT while those in the business are extraverts.

What is in it for you as a customer or partner reading this book? To me it would be to benchmark your company/customer to the survey results/companies in the book. It is good to take a step back and look at the industry outlook and see what other vendors are doing with BI, Big Data, Cloud and more. How do you measure success in business intelligence?

Successful Business Intelligence, Second Edition by Cindi Howson is a significant revision to the first edition, which was published in 2007. Cindi Howson is well known in the SAP BusinessObjects community as the author of SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0 The Complete Reference 3/E as well as earlier editions for XI R2 and 6.0. But she is also a lecturer for The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI) and publishes research on multiple business intelligence tools at BIScorecard.com.

The book is organized around the results of The Successful BI survey conducted in 2012. Although several of the case studies will mention specific tools, the book is intended for BI practitioners regardless of the tools that they are using. The book is written in a manner that can be understood by anyone working with business intelligence, whether business or technical, staff or management.

Books such as Successful Business Intelligence can be tricky to read because we are all tempted to underline or quote passages that reinforce our built-in biases about what "successful" BI looks like while ignoring other passages that highlight deficiencies in our approach. This isn't a flaw of this book or its author, but of ourselves-- the readers. Successful Business Intelligence provides a descriptive narrative for multiple approaches to business intelligence, rather than a single prescriptive method. No silver bullet exists because there are so many variables that make every organization's BI implementation unique. But the successful implementations profiled in the book have found some fundamental principles that have allowed their BI implementations to achieve significant business impact.

Cindi is a master in helping the reader and implementer understand where to find and recognize value in deploying Business Intelligence. She is not theoretical, but a pragmatist who cites example after example and has hands-on experience. So many authors talk about the subject and quote others, but Cindi's knowledge is experiential and based on exposure to products and use cases. She steps you through the choices and helps you understand how to measure value. She speaks to both the business users and the technocrats with a language and examples that we all can understand. A refreshing read and not a re-hash of older tomes on a similar topic.

If you follow the principles of Successful Business Intelligence, you will have just that – successful business intelligence. This is an updated comprehensive look at business intelligence – everything but the technology details. This book folds in up-to-date topics of big data, agile, cloud and all relevant matter since the book was first published. It has particularly strong content in the IT-business relationship, cultural issues and achieving success. I recommend Successful Business Intelligence as the foundation book for everyone on the team and the “do this” book for business intelligence leaders.

I've been reading Cindi's books since I started in the business intelligence field some 8+ years ago and it never ceases to amaze me how she manages to not only keep updated on all the trends and issues facing the ever evolving business intelligence industry.
Like her other books (all of which I own), this updated version of Successful Business Intelligence truly is a gem.

I like how she has provided an inclusive and comprehensive view of how popular buzz words like big data, cloud and mobile fit in the business intelligence equation.

The level of the book is also great for both a beginner and seasoned professionals.

This book is a must for anyone who is in the business intelligence industry who is serious about succeeding.
Cindi's knowledge studies and unique perspectives provide insight that you just won't find elsewhere.
I continue to be a fan of her work...
