About the Author

FRANK H.T. RHODES retired from the presidency of Cornell University in 1995 after serving for 18 years. Before his appointment at Cornell, he was successively professor of geology, dean of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan. |e He has also taught at the Universities of Illinois, Durham, and Wales. He is a former chair of the National Science Board, and he served on the President's Education and Policy Advisory Committee. In 1987, he chaired the National Commission on Minority Participation in Education and American Life. He is a former chair of the American Council on Education (ACE), the Association of American Universities, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
