3.0 out of 5 stars Annoying Main Character - always a bad start
First, I would characterize this more as Urban Fantasy than paranormal romance. It's told in first person, there isn't one main couple, etc. So if you are looking for a PR, I would advise you not to pick up this book for that purpose.

This book had some very funny moments, I will grant that, but most of what I felt while reading it was a low grade annoyance...

4.0 out of 5 stars Succubi Like It Hot by Jill Myles, January 18, 2010
This review is from: Succubi Like It Hot (Succubus Diaries) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jackie thought she was getting her life back on track by taking a job with the New City University archaeological team. She has recently been turned into a succubus, which means she has to have sex every couple of days to sate the "itch" that arises. She turns to her two masters, fallen angel Noah and vampire Zane who more than willingly scratch the itch for her. However, these days, Jackie is noticing the need to have sex is increasing, to almost every day. One would think having sex with two beautiful and very sexy men wouldn't be that much of a hardship, but Jackie soon discovers her need for more sex is going to have deadly consequences. It is hard to kill an immortal such as a succubus, but being cursed, is a sure, although slow way. Another side effect of the curse is wiping the brains of any mortal she touches. She puts them into a comatose state, and when she uses her succubus powers to reach into them to wake them up, she can't find the person.

The only other succubus Jackie knows, is porn star Remy Summore (ram-me-some-more....HA) who is fast becoming a good, albeit unique friend. Remy has no idea who cursed Jackie nor how, but she has an idea how to find out. Remy is also dealing with her own demon possession, Joachim, from the first book, and Joachim often wants to come out and "play," which soon causes many problems for Jackie. Remy suggests a trip to New Orleans to meet up with a very old Succubus, who is also a voodoo priestess. Jackie wants to get there as fast as she can, but Remy has a porn movie to promote and begs Jackie to go on a road trip. Reluctantly Jackie agrees.

Jackie is hesitant to tell Noah or Zane about the curse, with their already rocky relationship. In fact, Noah is tired of sharing Jackie and wants her to make a decision. Jackie is not ready to commit to one person, when Noah is not available during the night and vice versa for Zane. She needs them both, especially now that her sexual needs are greater. Noah is done with sharing and tells Jackie he needs space. Devastated, and not wanting to have sex with strangers on her road trip, she convinces Zane to come with her.

Not far into the trip, Zane discovers Jackie is cursed and abruptly leaves. Now Jackie is on her own, and very horny. Worse, she is being followed by a tall, dark stranger. Luc is willing to help Jackie make it to New Orleans, but Jackie doesn't know if she can trust this stranger or if she can be with someone other than Zane and Noah. When threats and bloody bodies start surrounding Jackie, she hopes Zane or Noah will come to the rescue and find a cure for her curse, before it is too late.

Succubi Like it Hot is a really fun book. I enjoyed it so much!! While I liked the first book in the series, Gentlemen Prefer Succubi, I think this is the book where Jill Myles really hits her stride. While I found Jackie a little over the top and silly in the first book, in Succubi Like it Hot, she really starts coming to terms with her out of control life, yet she still will make you giggle throughout. She really is at the mercy of men to feed her sex needs, or she will eventually die. It is almost like she lost a little bit of the cocky, sarcastic attitude and the realization of her new life starts to sink in. Plus, with the curse that is slowly killing her, her immortality is in question, and she becomes desperate to find a cure. At one point in the book, she says she has to start doing things for herself. She can't care if Zane or Noah or an innocent gets hurt, which is something always on her mind. She gains some independence with the realization that she has to make decisions to save her own life.

While Remy has no problem having sex with anything that moves, Jackie just can't have sex with strangers. She trusts (to a certain degree) Zane and Noah. That trust is really tested when Zane takes off at the beginning of their road trip. While I was all for Team Zane (yes I must declare teams) in Gentlemen Prefer Succubi, Succubi Like It Hot gives you lots of time to come to love Noah, and I must say, I fell hard for him. Don't get me wrong, he has his secrets too - and Jackie knows it. But he truly loves Jackie and really tries to prove that in this book. Noah isn't perfect though. Jackie has a hard time trusting Zane because he takes off and keeps many secrets. Yet at the same time, Noah spouts off commands to Jackie and because he is her master, she has no choice but to follow. While both men declare they only have their best intentions towards Jackie, they both follow through on actions that puts doubts in Jackie's mind.

There are a few instances where Jackie overlooks details that really stood out. Threats written on mirrors, certain people turn up very, very dead, people stalking her and she just kind of brushes it off at first, without much concern. I feel like she should have been a little more in tune with the warning signs around her. I also sometimes question the absolute love and devotion Noah and Zane give to Jackie, for not knowing her very long. However, these books run over the span of weeks, and as the reader you don't see every interaction with them, so I suppose there has been a solid basis for a relationship.

The end of the book is going to give you the itch until the third book comes out! I even had a little sniffle. This book is still full of plenty of humor and lots of hot sexin' by the boys. One of my favorite scenes is with Noah in the shower. I have to agree with Jackie when she says it is "the best shower I'd ever had."

Succubi Like It Hot is steamy, full of laughs and just an all around entertaining book. The Succubus Diaries series has made it onto my favorites list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Sexy Sequel (B+ Grade), February 12, 2010
This review is from: Succubi Like It Hot (Succubus Diaries) (Mass Market Paperback)
When we left Jackie after the events of Gentlemen Prefer Succubi, she was coming to terms with her new succubus lifestyle and trying to juggle two incredible, sexy men who were responsible for her situation. There's the fallen angel Noah, her one night stand who is a sweet and tender gentleman. Then there is Zane, that dark and seductive vampire who frustrates her, but also channels her inner wild bad girl. They're not too thrilled in sharing her, especially Noah. Zane thinks Jackie will eventually drop gentleman lover boy and come running to him. But Jackie hates to choose because she has strong feelings for both these men and they are more than willing to give her a hand whenever her sexual itch arises. In Succubi Like It Hot, not only does Jackie have to keep her itch under control, but she has been cursed and needs to find a way to break it and fast before she shrivels up and dies, overcome with lust that will never be quenched.

Jackie Brighton's life from all outside purposes looks to be perfect. She has an amazing new job working for the New City University's archeology department, a great sex kitten look that makes the men go wild and new interesting friends, such as Remy, another succubus who works as a porn star and Noah, who is more than willing to be her date to any University functions that pops up, as well as wanting to be her exclusive boyfriend. Unfortunately, Jackie can stay away from Zane who tends to her needs when Noah can't. Jackie thinks having both these men at her disposal is great. Noah hates sharing Jackie because as a Serim, he doesn't get along with vampires and wants Jackie to commit to him and issues an ultimatum.

With Zane no where to be found, Jackie drowns her woes in sappy movies and pizza. When she touches the pizza guy, he falls to sleep at her feet and won't wake up. She calls Remy for help since the men in her life are giving her the cold shoulder. Remy has seen tells Jackie she has been cursed and if she doesn't find a cure, her itch will intensify where she'll need sex not only every few days but almost every hour until she'll wilt away and die. Plus she can't touch anyone who is human or they will fall sleep also. They end up in a cemetery where they try to locate an angel to help them, but instead meet up with a demon who gives Jackie some advice and in turn needs a favor. The favor involves going to New Orleans and visiting Delilah, the oldest succubus in America.

Instead of flying by plane, Remy recommends a road trip because she wants to publicize her new movie. Jackie asks Zane to come along with them, mainly because she needs him to keep her itch from taking over her every thought and emotion. When he agrees in the heat of the moment, she thinks everything will turn out okay. But then Zane finds out she's cursed and splits. Now this has become a road trip to hell for her and Remy. Not only does an evil demon that has possessed Remy's body take over at the most inopportune moments, but Jackie is being stalked by a sexy French guy named Luc who wants to be her knight in shining armor. She makes a big mistake when it comes to him and does something that could ruin her chances with both Noah and Zane. Dead bodies start to line up wherever Jackie goes and when she finally gets to New Orleans and meets Delilah, she finds out that someone close to her may have given her the curse and it may be on of her two lovers.

I have to hand it to Jill Myles for writing a sequel that really came together for me. The main problems I found in regards to her writing in her first book is missing here. This sequel is a big improvement with many rip roaring laughs. I had a huge smile all the way through while I read, and felt so bad for Jackie because the poor girl finds herself in the most awkward of scrapes. I can't help but adore Jackie because her reactions to things and internal thoughts are one of the main reasons to pick up this book.

There are also some nice subtle twists you won't see coming, especially with Zane. Readers may find themselves torn again between who is better for Jackie and the way Zane reacts to Jackie's curse will have you wanting to strangle him. Keep in mind this is all for a good reason. But again, Jill makes a great case for both these suitors for Jackie's body and heart, and a part of me really doesn't want her to choose even though I am more inclined to side with Zane.

One of my favorite things when reading about a character like Jackie is that her morals are always intact. If she wanted to, she could live up her succubus lifestyle to the max where she can go through men like tissues. But Jackie doesn't do that. She is faithful to those she cares about, and even though she swings back and forth between Noah and Zane, you can totally understand why.

Succubi Like It Hot is really a heartfelt book with unique characters, loopy drama and fun action. If you're feeling under the weather emotionally and need some cheer and laughs, do give Succubi Like it Hot a go. This is definitely one hot and engaging read that gave me the warm and fuzzies until the very last page

Succubi Like It Hot by Jill Myles

"Succubi Like It Hot" is the second installment in this great new speculative fiction/urban fantasy series called The Succubus Diaries. Book one is "Gentlemen Prefer Succubi" and the third...well I don't know exactly when the third on will be coming out, but I'm going to hold my breath hoping that Jill will write a little faster and the publisher will publish a little faster so I won't die of anticipation!

Although I know that this book may be touted as a "paranormal romance" it really isn't. Don't expect a happily ever after for the main characters or romantic candlelit dinners and cooing words of love eternal---she is, after all a Succubus, she needs sex to live. It is more along the lines of pure speculative fiction or even urban fantasy. What this book has, is hot sex, murder, mystery and mayhem, a lot of humor, great writing, excellent main characters and annoyingly funny and perfect secondary characters. We have demons and fallen angels and vampires. We have men of the human kind that can't seem to stop falling in love with Jackie and her Succubi attractions.

I would like to suggest that while it's not imperative that you read the first novel, you may want to just so you have a better understanding with some of the finer details. Ms Myles certainly does make it easy to follow along, but again the first book will make understanding this one a bit easier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Annoying Main Character - always a bad start, March 2, 2010

First, I would characterize this more as Urban Fantasy than paranormal romance. It's told in first person, there isn't one main couple, etc. So if you are looking for a PR, I would advise you not to pick up this book for that purpose.

This book had some very funny moments, I will grant that, but most of what I felt while reading it was a low grade annoyance. Whenever you are reading a first person narrative, you better like the person talking. That doesn't mean they have to be perfect or saintly. However, I did not like the main character. She did some amazingly dumb things, things that made me think, "I expect my 10 year old nephew to have more sense than this." Beyond those type things, it came down to I did not want to spend time with this character. She felt unrealistic to me.

Once you don't like the main character, you really can't go beyond that. Nothing stood out to me as really great. I didn't find the secondary characters that great, or love interests.

It was an average book. Some funny moments, but nothing really beyond that. While I can't say I hated it, I can't say that next week at this time I'll be thinking of it, definitely won't recommend it to my friends, and won't be buying another book in this series. I would read another book by this author in another series, I liked her writing enough to give her another chance with different characters, but that's about it.

3.0 out of 5 stars More like lukewarm, January 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Have you ever read a book and absolutely hated the main character but liked the book anyway? That's how I feel about Succubi Like It Hot. My dislike for Ms. Jackie Brighton reached an all new level while reading this novel. My desire to throw my Kindle increased tenfold as I read this book. I didn't see any growth in Jackie as a character. If anything, she's backsliding. She's getting more and more annoying if that's even possible. The book starts off with it being a couple of weeks after their encounter with the vampire queen Nitocris. Jackie has a new job as an archaelogist and she has two hot guys (a fallen angel and a vampire) at her beck and call. The downside is that both guys want a committment. Neither one of them is happy sharing her with the other. They both approach Jackie and demand that she makes a choice. And to make matters worse, Jackie finds out that she's cursed. The need to scratch the Itch becomes more frequent and more intense. This leads her on a roadtrip with Remy to New Orleans to find a cure.

What can I say about this book? I like the book. I hate Jackie. I feel like I'm in an unhealthy relationship. Why continue the abuse? Because I love Noah, Zane and Remy. If it weren't for them, I would have given up on this series after reading Gentlemen Prefer Succubi. I find no redeeming qualities in Jackie; believe me I looked. She's whiny, selfish and idiotic. As a succubus, Jackie has a "spidey sense" where she can sense when she's in danger. Does she pay attention to it? Of course not! That would require someone to have some damn sense! There were many times while reading I smacked my forehead and said, "Jackie, you idiot!" She's also a terrible friend. Remy does so much for her and when Remy needs a favor, Jackie acts like it's an inconvenience.

I know it's hard to believe that I like the Succubus Diaries series but I really do. It's a fun, quick read with humor and adventure. The sex is just ok; nothing special in my opinion. I look forward to reading Book 3. I just hope that there's more character development for Ms. Jackie Brighton.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Triangle gone wrong, November 17, 2010
This review is from: Succubi Like It Hot (Succubus Diaries) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Story

Jackie is cursed, if it isn't fixed she will die. He boyfriends Noah and Zane are jealous of each other and both holding on to secrets of their own. Remy is having possession problems. With the curse Jackie's Itch is getting worse by the minute, her and Remy travel to New Orleans to visit the oldest Suck alive. There is someone stalking Jackie on their trip and her men keep floating in and out of the picture, but her time is running out.

Thoughts

The second addition to the succubus diaries wasn't as funny as the first(still amusing tho), but it was waaay more hot. The yo-yo between Jackie-Zane-Noah gets a little old by the end. I understand the delima. Noah is alpha sweet and reliable, Zane is alpha unpredictable and wild. The plots are interesting, keeps ya guessing. I'm highly curious where the next novel is going to go between the three. I know I can't choose which master I like better. The pace is fast. There are new characters introduced into this series. The characters reveal themselves more and more each book. There are definitely still secrets yet to be told about the characters and circumstances.

2.0 out of 5 stars An OK book, June 15, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
In this sequel to Gentlemen Prefer Succubi we find Jackie Brighton finder her feet as a succubus. But, her new life isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Jackie is cursed, and with the help of another succubus named Remy, she is going to get to the bottom of it all. And, if she has some adventures along the way, so much the better!

Now, I like the new genre of supernatural eroticism as much as the next gal and I have read quite a few really good examples. Sadly, this is not a good example. Right on the cover they tell you that it is "laugh-out-loud" funny, but it fails as a work of humor. I mean, it has its funny moments, but it really isn't laugh-out-loud funny. The eroticism was admittedly pretty good. But, the weakness of the book is frankly the story. It need a little oomph. I just could not take the book seriously, not even on its own terms.

No, this is an OK book, and I think that the author has a lot of potential, but it's just not quite there yet.

This is a fun, tongue-firmly-in-cheek romp through current reality. Well, "current reality" plus some major paranormal craziness like succubi, vampires and fallen angels.

Character development is a little thin, but the story keeps you moving along well. Bottom line, if you enjoy paranormal romance and want a light, easy read, this would be a perfect book for you.

If you are looking for something with a little more substance, look elsewhere. I enjoyed it well enough, but it doesn't make me want to go find other books by this author.

This is the second book in the Succubus Diaries series.

In the previous book she was turned from a frumpy nobody to the sexually desirable immortal that she is today. She has two boyfriends; a fallen angel named Noah and a vampire named Zane. Both boyfriends are competing for her one on one attention and poor Jackie (*sarcasm*) just can't choose. Jackie is still trying to get used to her new Succubus body and life when she discovers that she is cursed.

Jackie begins a road trip to New Orleans for help with her Porn Star/Succubus best friend, Remy, and trouble continues to follow.

Jackie and her entourage are entertaining and the mishaps and adventures along the way made the book next to impossible to set down. Relying, alternately, on her two boyfriends to relieve her increasing Succubus `itch' makes for some sexy reading. This isn't the deepest succubus series out there, it's filled with sex and fluff, but I really enjoyed it.

I haven't read the first book in the series, but after reading this one I feel I have to, I want to. I want to know where it all began and I plan on reading the next book in the series, too. I have been successfully reeled into this series, the author created a fun group of characters and a breezy and sexy little world. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Newly made succubus, Jackie Brighton is back. Life as a succubus is not as easy as it seems. Oh the way guys are now interested in Jackie is nice as well as getting the promotion at work but dealing with boyfriend issues and being cursed...sucks.

Jackie is trying to deal with both Noah, who is a fallen angel and Zane, a vampire. The male testosorone levels between these two are in full force. Jackie somehow becomes cursed. She put the pizza guy into a coma. Remy, Jackie's good friend and fellow succubus suggests that Jackie and her take a road trip to New Orleans to visit the oldest living succubus t help Jackie. In the meantime, Jackie is also dealing with her itch for sex and with neither of Noah or Zane talking to Jackie; it is going to be a long road trip.

Just like the last book, Succubi Like It Hot brings the fire, humor, and pure enjoyment! Jackie is so hilarious. When you throw Remy into the mix, she and Remy are like Thelma and Louise. It is easy to see why Jackie can't choose between Noah and Zane. They are both tall, sexy guys. Noah is the good guy and Zane is the bad boy.

If you haven't tried these books out yet then now is the perfect time. Pick up a copy of Gentlemen Prefer Succubi; book one in the Succubus Diaries series today. Jill Myles has been added to my favorite author list. I only had one issue with this book...that is I finished it. Now I have a long wait till the next book in this series, My Fair Succubi is released.
