3.0 out of 5 stars slippery slope, August 8, 2008
By Stargrazer "the lost mixtape of my life" (deep in the heart of Michigan) - See all my reviews
"Such Triumph" begins with whispery bells of guitar distortion before Husker Du/Replacements style fast guitar strums surge briefly to the forefront. Then the song sighs, and dies.

The following tracks suggest, at points, Les Savy Fav, The Fall, or Pavement. These touchstones emerge and then submerge again, never gelling long enough to make The Narrator seem derivative. Much like the structure of the opening track, these tantalizing appearances serve to add length and breadth to songs that seem at once nonchalantly tossed-off and elaborately, almost mathily structured.

"Such Triumph" ultimately works very well. What seems to lack direction or detail at first, gains detail upon repeated listens. Songs like "This Party's Over" (which appears toward the end of the album) start off in beatless, arhythmic space before coalescing into slackerdly indie anthem territory. A listener informed by post-punk or late 80s/early 90s indie rock will find a lot to like here.
