4.0 out of 5 stars Lunatic Misunderstandings, December 8, 2010
The title of Orwell's essay is ironic, of course. His experiences at St. Cyprian's, an English boarding school, were anything but 'joys.' For the weak and inferior Orwell, "to survive, or at least to preserve any kind of independence, was essentially criminal, since it meant breaking rules which you yourself recognized," and that he lived in a world "where it was not possible [for him] to be good." Orwell wonders how he was able to survive and "live for years amid irrational terrors and lunatic misunderstandings."
