4.0 out of 5 stars Suck on this
this very first Primus album still sounds very agressive and punchy - "Heckler","Jellikit","John the fisherman" are full of energy and anger. Claypool's virtuoso bass lines,Herb's hard drumming and some noisy guitars are what Primus is famous for on their live showes.here we have them in all grace.
The songs have many black humour in lyrics.Les is not only amazing...

3.0 out of 5 stars Les is more
3 1/2

Cool alternative to their studio debut, this nine song live set highlighted the band's eccentric appeal and notable chemistry (LaLonde and Alexander being one of the few guitar and drum sections able to compliment Claypool's one of a kind technique), apparently only two months into it's current incarnation nonetheless.

The songs have many black humour in lyrics.Les is not only amazing bass player and vocalist,i believe he is the best lyricist in modern avantgarde rock.
i prefer their studio albums but i love the raw sound they have got here.brutal and unpolished.
hats off for Primus.

5.0 out of 5 stars I sucked on this, and it was good, December 9, 2003
This review is from: Suck on This (Audio CD)
When i first glanced at suck on this a couple of months ago, I wasn't all that well motivated. After all, I already had frizzle fry, which 5 of the song on it, and pork soda which had "the pressman," and i also think that this is why there so few people reviewing it.
But then how did i come to buying it awhile later? As it turns out, this cd isn't all that appealig if you view it as an entirely different album, but if you view it as the songs from two early primus concerts packed in this really cool little digipack (if you get the re-release), so that it can be heard any time, any where.
As far as the music itself goes, it is amazing. and there are slight differences in the songs from thier studeo versions(except for jellikit, which a studeo if any, is yet to come), for example "John the fisherman," has a different, yet better intro, or the chorus of "the pressman," the drums are louder, and more appearent, which makes it sound a lot less awkward than the studeo version from "pork soda," the only critisizm here was the abscence of tom waits in "tommy the cat" but its still a good song.
One last comment isthat this is one of those great live albums, where the sound doesn't occaisianally get marred by the audience, when they are cheering in the middle of the song, nor are there those times when the singer pauses to let the audience sing part of the song, and you can't make out what they are saying. which makes it one of best collections of live songs I've ever heard.

overall 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars from the opening triangle ringing of rush's "yyz"..., November 5, 1999

This review is from: Suck On This (Audio CD)
i knew this was going to be quite an adventure to listen to. after buying "seas of cheese" and finally realizing my love for it and then sinking my teeth into the "misc. debris" ep, it was time to continue my newfound relationship with the band called primus. seemed to me the best way to go would be to check out what their live show would be like from a distance. so i picked up "suck on this" and discovered some vintage primus. it was time to try to catch up and this was the perfect way to do it. say what you will about live albums, but if you appreciate a good show in a cozy, smoke-filled bar with a hundred strangers you don't know, you'll appreciate this, especially if you know what you're getting yourself into from the moment you push the play button. i love the live version of "groundhogs day" as well as "the heckler." for a while, it was the only track off "suck on this" that was missing as a studio version on a later disc, so i always wondered what i would sound like. luckily, i finally found out at the end of "antipop".

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a first album??, October 14, 1999
This review is from: Suck On This (Audio CD)
The craziest thing about this album is that Les Claypoole had only been playing with the other members, "Herb" and Ler for three months when this was recorded. You would have never noticed judging by the great songs. The only things this CD offers that "Frizzle Fry" doesn't is "Tommy the Cat", "Jellikit", and "The Heckler". The sound isn't as clean, but you do get a live "ballroom" sound. This CD is getting tougher and tougher to find these days. If you're a fan, you better buy it right now!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Primus ever, September 10, 2004

If you like Primus but have never heard this album: BUY IT. Heck, if for any reason you think you might like this album: BUY IT. It is the best Primus album by far. Even if you don't care for live albums: BUY IT. It just rocks. Not only is Les Claypool amazing, he is almost outshined by Larry LaLonde's guitar playing. And as a fan of Les's crazy voice, I find that it sounds better here than it does on a lot of the studio stuff where he kind of gets drowned out. (Or someone else does the vocals like on Tommy the Cat.) This is quality stuff and as the first Primus album I ever owned, everything after was a disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert Kenneth Perlstein - Primus SUCKS!, November 17, 2010
This review is from: Suck on This (Audio CD)
This album is what Primus was. They have mellowed out a fair share since the 80s, for better or worse. This album is full of disgusting bass fills, mind blowing guitar riffs, and non-stop in-your-face drum slamming. Easily one of my favorite live albums by a band in their early years.

If you like Les Claypool than you owe it to yourself to give this a listen.

This is Primus' first album. If you are a primus fan then why haven't you got this yet? This is rocorded from their earlier live shows. The sound quality is actually pretty good. This is the first release of popular hits such as John The Fisherman and Tommy The Cat. Hey, it's Primus, what else needs to be said?

5.0 out of 5 stars primus sucks!!!!, July 28, 2004
This review is from: Suck on This (Audio CD)
this was the best thing ive ever sucked on. i loved how it opened up to rush's yyz (wich is an awesome song)and went rite into john the fisherman. i also liked how u get to hear songs that werent on cds yet like tommy the cat cause u could tell it was slower than the tommy the cat on sailing the seas of cheese, but its still my favorite song on this cd and les claypools solo is sick on that track. every primus fan should have this.
