4.0 out of 5 stars Characters with a bite!, July 28, 2009
This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
The fifth book in Kimberly Raye's Dead End Dating series delivers more of what fans have come to expect. Some laugh aloud moments, some dating disasters, and a threat to charming vampire matchmaker Lil's life...er afterlife. "Sucker For Love" finds Lil's friend Esther kidnapped right from Lil's matchmaking party. Lil, against warnings from about everyone, plans to rescue Esther herself. The mystery was ok, but in the Dead End Dating series the mysteries and murder are really just a side plot. I wish Ms. Raye would realize that the best moments in these novels are those which star Lil and her friends. Even better, those moments are the ones that focus on Lil and her crazy matchmaking schemes and clients. Lil is similar to MJD's "Betsy" but better. She feels real and fleshed out in a way Betsy hasn't for many book now. Lil wants to be a baddie vampire but she is tenderhearted and compassionate. She is strong when she needs to be and always very loyal. This book was at its peak when Lil was in a dumpy hotel in a small town, dealing with they barn animals outside and the old lonely hotel manager. The scenes with Lil's mom trying to sabotage her new daughter in law were great as well. This reader almost forgot about the Merlin and friends murder and rescue plot. The 'climax' scene featuring the kidnapping resolution was actual very anti-climactic and vaguely disappointing. This is a rare series that doesn't need to be a thriller or heavy duty romance. It can stand alone as a comical, light romance story. The characters are strong enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Story Line Stalling, December 5, 2009
This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
This series is on the verge of being done. Our main character Lil is in and out of trouble yet again. She is still madly in love with Ty (a non-born vamp) and is still in credit card debit. In this story she is on the hung for a wizard that has stolen one of her friends and is going to kill her. She is tenacious and always fashionable while still having a sense of humor. A quick fun read.

This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
"Sucker for Love" is book five of Kimberly Raye's 'Dead End Dating' series starring the fantabulous Lil Marchette. Lil's a BV (born vampire as opposed to made...think elite vs redneck) whose life has become pretty complicated. She runs a dating service in the Big Apple and she refuses to discriminate. So she matches, shifters, vamps, demons, humans, and she's trying to get a fae match going too! Problem is that Lil is also VERY un-BV-like in that she's scared of bloody messes, actually LIKES others, and is afraid she's in love with a made vampire. Thank goodness she's still her wonderful, fashion-loving self! This time around she's dealing with sorcerers, demons, a pregnant BFF, her brother, her mother, and a whole host of others...all while trying to save one of her clients who's been kidnapped for use in a rejuvenation ceremony, finding new clients, and keeping the ones she has happy. Life for Lil is just a bloody mess!

This isn't one of my favorite series. I've finally figured out that I'm NOT in the target audience for this series. I think it would do better if the sex was toned down and it was marketed towards the teen/YA set. That's just me though. What turns me off is probably what would do so very well for the younger generation in that many times while reading, I felt like I was on FaceBook. It's the whole fashionista name-dropping and cutesy, modern slang that turns me off...but if that's your cup of tea...then you'll love this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific paranormal amateur sleuth, June 25, 2009
This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
At a Dead End Dating gala, Esther, a Born vampire client who is five century old (who's counting - she's not) Lilliana Marchette, vanishes. Hostess of the evident, pink loving vampire Lil learns that the warlock Mordred Lucius abducted the vampire with plans to use her in a ritual as an Undead sacrifice. Mordred plans to regain his youth and obtain immortality.

Lil is told to mind her business as Mordred is too powerful to confront. However, she believes interfering is her business as the warlock stole a client from her. She begins her quest to save Esther's vampiric life (an anti oxymoron) while avoiding the warlock. However, the party attendees and crashers from her mom, her best friend, and her brother's girlfriend refuse to let her go it alone; making stealth somewhat difficult.

The latest Dead End Dating (see JUST ONE BITE) is a terrific paranormal amateur sleuth as Lil and her cronies take on the worst dude in town without her significant other Ty, a bounty hunter working a case. The story line is a fun filled over the top of the Empire State Building caper as pampered Lil feels she is responsible for matchmaking her clients and since Mordred is not one of them, he can't have Esther who is one of them. Fans of the series will enjoy Lil and the stable as they challenge Manhattan's meanest malevolent mage Mordred the Warlock.

4.0 out of 5 stars There's Nothing Lil Won't do for Love, August 11, 2009

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lil Marchette, the fantastically fashionable and hopeless romantic vampire owner of Dead End Dating, is in a bit of trouble as usual. This time her guarantee to find several clients love in a certain amount of time or their money back is about to expire but her credit card bills are well and truly alive and breathing down her neck. Returning hard won money is unthinkable when she has makeup to buy. So as a final push she stages a ball at the Plaza for all the species to mingle and find somebody to love. And just when everything looks like it can't get any better, a warlock kidnaps her made vampire friend Esther(from the series first book) and Lil is desperate to get her back before she's tortured to death as part of a ritual spell.

On top of that, as if that wasn't horrifying enough, Lil's mother is trying to drug Mandy, her new and horrifyingly human daughter-in-law, with contraceptive pills in an effort to keep her from bringing a non vampire baby into the family. Her secret boyfriend, Ty the bounty hunting made vampire, is having commitment issues that are driving Lil loopy. And the Nina who is dating her brother, one of her best buds, is having commitment issues of her own and a crisis that's well worth reading about!

With her family overwhelming her and time ticking down, Lil takes matters into her own two manicured hands only to have all her troubles follow her across the country. Weirdly everything works out in the end, just not as she or the reader may expect. This was a very fast paced read without the heaviness that dragged the last two books down. I was laughing out loud more than once and am definitely looking forward to the next book which there was a great teaser for at the end of this story. I can't wait to see how Lil gets out of the next crazy predicament!

1.0 out of 5 stars I am a glutton for punishment., January 9, 2010
This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read all three of these execrable books, hoping something good would happen, that the heroine wouldn't turn out to be a moronic, shallow piece of crap, but, alas, no. Why the sexy bounty hunter would fall for this self-centered monster of a label-whore is beyond me, except that it's part of the same old hackneyed scheme, and I suppose he has to. The heroine is awful, she thinks she's beautiful and worries a lot about fashion, even when people around her are dying. Her dating service is a sham, as she finds everyone who isn't beautiful and obsessed with money and accessories as she is practically undate-able. The kicker is when she meets a woman she thinks is destined to be alone forever (even though she's smart and kind and pretty) - because she's 20 pounds overweight. Yep, 20 whole huge unbelievable pounds. What a whale.

This series actually made me really dislike this author, because while she's trying to be funny and perky, she's really showing off her unkind judgements about others who aren't as fashion-savvy or obsessed with their appearances as she is. Ghastly. Don't bother reading it unless you like being disgusted and appalled. There are a lot of other great authros out there -- keep looking for them instead.

This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
This series started off well with it's fun twist on dating services for the supernatural folk. It has slipped, however, into books with pages and pages of inane dialog and boring plot with very little real story behind it. This book in particular was a disappointing waste of reading time. Skip it and hope the next in the series is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sucker for Love-A Joyfully Recommended Title, October 26, 2009
This review is from: Sucker for Love: A Dead-End Dating Novel (Dead-End Dating Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lil Marchette is a Born Vampire who is as into fashion as any runway model and she pretends to be a Bad Ass Vampire, but in the inside she is a softhearted, romantic fashionista. She is continually struggling to keep her business, Dead End Dating, afloat and one step ahead of the creditors and having to move back home with her parents. Really, isn't being five hundred old enough to live on your own? Apparently, Lil's parents didn't get the memo on that or the fact that she doesn't want to be set up with any of the übber snob Born Vampires her mother is constantly setting her up with. And on top of that, Lil is on the fence about introducing to her family her super-hot boyfriend Ty to her family, since he is a Made Vampire and that's a no-no for Born Vampires like Lil.

This time Lil has hit upon the perfect idea to give her business a lift - the Meet and Greet of the century for all supernatural beings. All is going well, until one of Lil's favorite clients, Esther, comes up missing, leaving a huge trail of blood in her wake. As Lil straps on her Bad Ass Vampire sling backs she sets out to investigate the whereabouts of Esther and save her at all costs. But will Lil have the chance when she has to balance her nosy family, keep her business running, keep Ty under wraps and battle a nefarious Warlock for Esther's life?

Sucker for Love is an amazing funny book will have you rolling in laughter as Lil valiantly struggles against fashion challenged people, the blistering heat of Texas and her meddling mother. Lil is absolutely hilarious with her witty internal dialogue and crazy antics to keep all the balls she's juggling in the air. In the spirit of the best vampire comedies, Sucker for Love will floor you with Lil as the classic anti-vampire and a family that nobody would wish on anyone - but they and Lil's kooky friends will have you laughing out loud as it keeps you glued to your seat and turning the pages way past your bedtime! Kimberly Raye keeps the fire going in the vampire genre in this fifth installment of the Dead End Dating universe, which will leave you eagerly waiting for the next installment of the series. I absolutely loved, loved, loved Sucker for Love to the point that I can't wait to see what comes next as this is an extraordinary book that will pull you into the story from the get-go and leave you wishing for more of Lil and her band of unique friends and family! Get yourself Sucker for Love as it's an exciting and funny romp into the life of a Bad Ass Born Vampire and her adventures!
