Book Description

The first tough-looking fella said to me, "You must fight to the death."

Los Angeles in 1955 might have seemed like a safe place to walk your dog. Unless you happen to walk into a certain establishment at the wrong time.

Which is what Irish Jimmy Gallagher and his bulldog, Steve, do one fine day. Jimmy simply wants to drop off his shirt at the laundry of J. Wong, proprietor. But then a man with a chip on his shoulder comes in and picks a fight, which is not something one should do when there's a Gallagher in the room.

But how then does Jimmy lose his dog, get thrown in jail, and end up in the middle of Tong war? Even more important: how does he survive any of this?

Pulp fiction about boxing and boxers has a long history in American literature. The Irish Jimmy Gallagher series is written in that tradition.

James Scott Bell is the author of numerous bestsellers and books on writing. A third generation Angeleno, he continues to live and write in his home town.

James Scott Bell spins a fast-paced and enjoyable romp in this work. Take a break, put your feet up, and follow the escapades of Jimmy Gallagher. Riding a gurney down a busy street? Yes, that is one to add to the bucket list.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll Be Sucked In May 3, 2014

A seamless ride from the opening disturbance with a flurry of fists, to rising tension and humor (including a crazy gurney ride down the streets of L.A.), and finishing with an unexpected and resonant climax and ending. This story will suck you in, make you laugh, and make you care about poor Jimmy. Before you know it the ride will be over and you'll want more.

I wasn't sure this would be my type story, but I do like James Scott Bell's writing and have read many of his novels. This short (very short) one still managed to have lots of unexpected happenings. I enjoyed it!

Even an Irish pugilist can be the good guy. Although for James Scott Bell's Jimmy Gallagher, being magnanimous gets him into a definite spot of trouble. All for the good of Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding May 4, 2014

Another outstanding short story from JSB. You'll roll with the twists and turns of this story just like Jimmy Gallagher rolls with the punches (literal and figurative) that life throws at him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers a Punch May 3, 2014
I've read a number of James Scott Bell 's books on writing and found 'Writing from the Middle' particularly illuminating. This is the first time I've read his fiction and I found it entertaining. Jimmy Gallagher is conjured up in a few moments; his voice and comments are marvellous, his adventures springing from his personality in a comic/tragic clinch with luck. I was pleased to see that it met the criteria laid out in 'Writing from the Middle.' This is a no-frills, polished, entertaining escapade and I recommend it. And it's inspired me to write some more short fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Got Sucked In And Am Glad! May 3, 2014

I love the Jimmy Gallagher stories! Talk about action! What a day Jimmy's having! One bump after another and he handles them all in his usual Irish style. If you don't know Irish Jimmy Gallagher, you're missing out on a lovable character. Bell's short stories are some of my favorite reads!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 'ol pulp fun! May 2, 2014

I loved this short story about a day in the life of Irish Jimmy Gallagher. Los Angeles, a bulldog named Steve, Irish whiskey, street fights, and an inscrutable sifu are the elements that add up to a fun "throw back" read.
