Book Description

October 1, 2001

Not so long ago in provincial New Zealand, anyone who has identified as homosexual was treated as an outcast. This entertaining and revealing first novel follows the lives of three gay men in New Zealand during the 1940s, 60s and 80s. This richly rewarding novel places Buchanan alongside the likes of big names such as Janet Frame, Witi Imimaera and Noel Virtue.

Jeff Buchanan was born in 1955 and left New Zealand at 17, spending the next two decades in South America, The Middle East, The USA and Melanesia, before returning home.

Sucking Feijoas by Jeff Buchanan

Set in New Zealand the book follows the story of three men:

George, who thinks he's macho...until he's seduced by an American serviceman.

Neddy, the son of Lebanese immigrants, who marries a peasant girl to overcome his attraction to men.

And GFarth, a working class Catholic boy who escapes to Mexico but eventually returns to New Zealand to reveal his painful secret.

With humor and understanding, this novel charts half a century in the lives of three gay men--and the suffering caused by living a double life.

An easy and fun read!
