Amazon.com Review

Scott Marcus says it would be easier to describe what doesn't suck about South Florida, but he understands that people are going to keep visiting, so he's written a most unusual and helpful book: an insider's guide to all the dreadful tourist traps you'll be glad to have avoided, plus pointers to the few sites and activities Marcus approves. It's refreshing to see a guidebook that's not trying to sell you and your grandmother on every snack stand and museum. And Marcus is funny, too, in a Dave Barry kind of way. For tourists, he describes the museums, boats, and beaches, the art galleries, nightlife, and hotels. For people moving to Florida, he describes the neighborhoods, malls, and politics, crime, sports, and media. And he tells you which restaurants are rip-offs and where to get great sushi, which Web sites to check out, and how to survive with the greatest portion of your sanity intact.

Review

"Miami writer Scott Marcus might need a new ZIP code when his first book -- a bare-knuckles look at South Florida -- hits stores this month...So what's there to like about South Florida? Marcus points to the weather ("If you enjoy 'sweltering'"), the beaches ("If you can see them or get to them"), the diverse culture ("When people aren't busy killing each other") and the startling statistic that most tourists survive their visits." -- The Atlantic Journal-Constitution

What Sucks About South Florida is a strange name for a quite good and very practical guide for travelers (and migrants) to South Florida. There are good neighborhoods and dangerous neighborhood, good restaurants and jip joints, good weather and seasonal hurricanes. What Sucks About South Florida reveals hard-core hideaways to the world's best beaches. Whether you are an "armchair traveler" or plan on vacationing in or moving to the South of Florida, here is the book for you! -- Midwest Book Review

3.0 out of 5 stars Incredible concept, OK book, January 6, 1998
This review is from: What Sucks About South Florida: The Travel-To, Move-To Guide (Paperback)

Once I heard about this book, I really had to read it. What a great concept. I love a travel guide that intends to tell it like it is, rather than present a glossy, tourist center advertisement to dupe you into visiting.

However, the information did not meet my expectations (based on the title). The "SUCKS" award was issued too infrequently throughout the book (e.g., only a few listed restaurants were dis-honored). The ranting (e.g., Boca, driving) was good and should have been used more often and effectively to demonstrate SUCK-ness.

Great commentary, in parts, but too infrequent. Too much space wasted on "practical" information, such as TV cable company listings. More useful would be an explanation (rant) of why utilities, schools, etc., do or do not suck and how to best avoid the bad ones.

Since the sub-title is "Strategies for Survival," I expected to see some. I did not, other than the listing of selected bad neighborhoods. "Do not go west of XYZ after dark" or "avoid moving to ABC at all costs" examples should have been more prevalent.

I was surprised that Calle Ocho was not, and that Mount Trashmore was barely, mentioned. Several places I enjoy or do not like were not mentioned, but I tried to view the book as entertainment rather than a true reference.

Overall, the book was entertaining but full of wasted potential. Can't wait for the sequel...

2.0 out of 5 stars GREAT POTENTIAL- - - Lost!, March 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: What Sucks About South Florida: The Travel-To, Move-To Guide (Paperback)
I purchased the book primarily because of the hard-hitting title, I wanted to read something realistic and not just a bunch of hot air. I have to say that, at least in part, the book had a realistic tone to it. Unfortunatly the author dropped the ball and filled most of the pages with dry statistics and a lot of personal preferences and opinions. I can't say the book is a wast of time, but it is a slacker! To put it another way, I felt the book was probably 20% of full potential. After reading the book I was left with the feeling that the whole purpose of the writing was to keep people from moving to Florida.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous and informative, October 27, 1999
This review is from: What Sucks About South Florida: The Travel-To, Move-To Guide (Paperback)
Great work; the author has strong opinions and isn't afraid to share them. If you're thinking about moving to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, you should definitely buy this book; it will prove an invaluable resource.

The only book I've seen about the area where you can find anything other than tourist board jingoism.
