Book Description

Meet Sprague Deacon - one of the toughest old-time hockey players who ever skated upon a rink of hand-poured ice. Sprague was born and raised and he expects to die here on the Northern Labrador coast. What he did not expect was a tour bus full of vampires - none of whom glitter in the least bit - to pull into his town and begin lowering the population level - one corpse at a time. Sprague and his three best friends - an over-the-hill never-say quit bush league hockey team from Northern Labrador go toe-to-tooth with a tour bus full of vampires in an immortal-stakes showdown of street hockey? For the answer - throw Paul Newman's Slapshot into a blender with Steven Niles 30 Days of Night and hit frappe!

Steve Vernon is the author of a dozen e-books of outrageously mind-blowing horror and dark fantasy including his horror/historical full length novel DEVIL TREE, the take-no-prisoners testosterone-fest superhero extravaganza NOTHING TO LOSE and the cult hit novella LONG HORN, BIG SHAGGY - A TALE OF WILD WEST TERROR AND REANIMATED BUFFALO.

Steve is a born storyteller who hits notes that have been known to hurt the ears of other notes.

Also including the bonus time travelling hockey tale, "Time Out".

"With SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME, Vernon perfectly captures the dark heart of a Canadian Winter and the lifetime passion surrounding the game of hockey. He takes a group of old friends who never backed down from a fight on the ice when they were younger and still refuse to do so even when they're old enough to know better. Toss on the rink some memorable characters, truly great dialogue, a bus load of nasty vampires, and a shocking surprise ending that you won't see coming and you've got yourself a story that's sure to be a winner." - Gord Rollo - author of VALLEY OF THE SCARECROW

"If Harlan Ellison, Richard Matheson and Robert Bloch had a three-way sex romp in a hot tub, and then a team of scientists came in and filtered out the water and mixed the leftover DNA into a test tube, the resulting genetic experiment would most likely grow up into Steve Vernon." - Bookgasm

"Steve Vernon is something of an anomaly in the world of horror literature. He's one of the freshest new voices in the genre although his career has spanned twenty years. Writing with a rare swagger and confidence, Steve Vernon can lead his readers through an entire gamut of emotions from outright fear and repulsion to pity and laughter." - Cemetery Dance

"Armed with a bizarre sense of humor, a huge amount of originality, a flair for taking risks and a strong grasp of characterization - Steve's got the chops for sure." - Dark Discoveries

"Steve Vernon was born to write. He's the real deal and we're lucky to have him." - Richard Chizmar

Best of all - you don't even need to be much of a hockey fan to enjoy this yarn.

Pick this one up. You won't regret it.

Review

"C'mon...hockey and vampires, how could I resist. You all know how much I love vampires and as much as I love vampires, I love hockey just as much. Combining the two in a horror story is just brilliant in my opinion, especially if it is done right.

Steve Vernon gets it right. "Sudden Death Overtime" hit all the right notes with me. A wonderful cast of characters, great dialogue between the characters and an evil bus full of vicious vampires.

Reading "Sudden Death Overtime" brought back so many memories of my childhood and our backyard skating rink that our father would painstakingly work on for hours. We would spend hours out there in the winter playing hockey. Of course, we didn't have a bus load of vampires to fend off...unfortunately.

The best part of the story is the group of "old guys" that still strap on the skates and maintain their backyard rink for the neighborhood children. Their love of hockey shines through in the way they communicate with each other and their willingness no matter how old they are getting to pass that love along to the next generation.

Characters are the driving force for me in any story and Steve's characters are wonderful, life like and quite funny also. They also accept what is happening to them and use their knowledge from horror movies to take on the vampires.

The ending is nothing that I really expected and I thought it was perfectly fitting for the tale." - FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND

Steve Vernon did a wonderful job of crafting an original vampire story. His ability to weave a story with a flow that is virtually flawless is a testament to how good a storyteller he is. I loved the characters and their personable dialogue and was able to plant myself easily in Labrador. While his metaphors were clever, I sometimes felt there were a few too many, though I understand the reasoning of Vernon's use for them. My suggestion is to read this short!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pucker Up It's Vampire Clobbering Time February 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Steve Vernon is one of those authors, that brings a big smile to my face every time I hear he has a new book out. He is also one of those authors that fully understands that the heart of a good book is a good story. He is a master of story teller, filling his story with brilliant characters and equally brilliant, and realistic dialogue.

You know you are in for a thrilling read when the central premise of the story is a bunch of old guys going up against a bus load of vampires with a dash of ice hockey thrown in. This is not so much Buffy The Vampire Slayer, more like Auld Duffers The Vampire Slayers. In fact there are some similarities, both have cracking dialogue, and both have a nice sly line in humour.

Vernon builds the tension right up to a wonderful final battle scene on on the ice, which has one of he best uses of Holy water I have ever come across. By the time he throws in a shock ending, you will have just read, one hell of a short story. Sudden Death Overtime is perfect example of a good time, fun filled pulp short story that will have you hollering for the good guys and booing at the bad guys.

Mr Vernon does dark, weird, disturbing humour like nobody else I've ever read.
After several disappearances (and a burning church for good measure), the old men of town, crazier and gnarlier than the weather-beaten fish oil paint that keeps their houses dry, find themselves up against a tour bus full of murderous Vampires. Typically, when faced with a scarier prospect than going without raw fish heads for a month, the guys do what they know best and challenge the mysterious and bloodthirsty newcomers to a Hockey Game.

It's often said that you can turn up to a fight in Canada and a Hockey Game might break out, and this is exactly what this blisteringly cold slice of Labrador bleak humour serves up. Clinging to life like the hard-edged landscape to which they cling, these hardy souls risk everything in an all-fangs-bared game to the finish. They even had the rink nice and smooth beforehand...watch out for the Holy Water!

You also get `Time Out': a heart-warming snapshot of a youth spent playing street hockey , and, as if that wasn't enough, a sneak of `Nothing to Lose' called `The Glint of Moonlight on Broken Glass', in which our hero, Captain Nothing, reveals himself to be as conflicted as he is courageous.

If this is what `Canlit' (that's Canadian Literature eh?) can produce, then bring on the snowdrifts of dark and scary humour! More please Steve!
