Don't Be Misled - This Book is for EVERY Woman,
By Lisa (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sudden Menopause: Restoring Health and Emotional Well-Being (Paperback)
I got this book because someone close to me was forced to undergo a hysterectomy at a very young age. Upon reading it, however, I discovered that I could learn as much from it as could any menopausal woman. The author includes a great deal of information that is useful for all women, everything from ways to address dry skin to nutritional concerns to infections. She offers non-traditional ways to address problems that women can try themselves, rather than just resorting prescriptions (although she does provide information on those). She includes "coping strategies" for the problems she identifies, and ends each chapter with bullet points from the chapter, which makes the material much easier to digest. She also ends the chapters with points to talk about with your doctor. Women who read this book will not only get health information but also tips on taking charge of their own health, and will no longer be satisfied with a doctor's dismissal of their very real conditions and concerns -- that might be the best result of all. I have recommended this book to every woman I know. Turns out that buying a book forsomeone else was really buying a book for myself!

I was really looking forward to reading this book, as I am currently struggling with surgical menopause, however, this book is (in my opinion) a complete waste of money...$15 I will never see again.
Firstly this book was clearly published (back in 2001) before we had the data available to us today (2010) regarding the dangers and serious risks associated with HRT. This book, page after page after page advocates the use of HRT which for many of us who are in surgical menopause (due to serious illnesses and therefore forced to ride out menopause without pharmaceutical intervention) cannot follow. I also found HUGE omissions in the information provided, again I would assume because studies over the past 10 years are light years ahead of the content of this book. For example, we know today that some of us must avoid black cohosh and soy products if we have venous problems, have had or are at risk of blood clots etc.. Taken at face value this book could do more harm than good. Oh, and some of my 'favorite' advice (NOT)in the book is the 'coping strategies' which a 5 year old could pick holes in...Let me see..."dress in layers so that you can shed your outer garments when a hot flash comes on..."...NOOOOOO, REALLY????? Sorry folks but this book is outdated, poorly written and extremely disappointing....in fact it has made me so angry...I am having a hot flash as I write this!

This book was a life saver - I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. I had a complete hysterectomy at 28 and couldn't find much to help me along with the sudden Menopause - this bok has explained so much - now I don't have to think I lost my mind - I realized I'm not alone in this and there a reason for what is happening to me not just "it will pass". I've recommended this book for friends who are still too be going through Menopause but will be someday and need to prepare - this book is a great way to do that.

Questions finally answered,

After having a hysterectomy with removal of my ovaries, I was unprepared for being thrown into menopause at such a young age - I am only 25. I was searching for answers and getting very little direction from my health care professional. Thank God I stumbled across Sudden Menopause by Debbie DeAngelo. I find this book to be extremely beneficial. The aspects I found most useful are the case histories and the coping strategies. After reading the case histories, I realized that I wasn't alone in what I was feeling and experiencing and the coping strategies are helpful in managing my symptoms. I also learned from reading this book that I am at a risk for osteoporosis as well as heart disease even though I am so young. It is obvious that this book was written by a woman who has been through sudden menopause and is concerned with helping other women to cope.

I ordered this book shortly after my total hysterectomy, at age 33. I knew a little about what to expect by doing some research on the internet, but this book COMPLETELY and THOROUGHLY explained everything I needed to know. I have owned this book now for 3 years and STILL refer to it often. I have read basic menopause books and hysterectomy books, but neither have given me the much needed information I found inside this book. I feel much more at ease and comfortable with the symptoms of menopause, hormonal replacement issues, and ESPECIALLY the emotional feelings that can take you by surprise after surgery. I have been able to make much more informed decisions on my personal healthcare after reading this. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE with surgical menopause or getting ready to experience it. You will NOT find better information. I consider it an essential part of my well being and even purchased an extra copy to donate to my local library for others to read.

A Must Have Resource for Women,
By Zen in Colorado "Lurv Those Mountains" (Longmont, Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews

This book was extremely helpful for me in making the decision to proceed with a hysterectomy. Since my surgery, I have referred to this book countless times. I truly don't believe any woman should undergo a hysterectomy without the benefit of this informative resource. I found the book easy to read and understand. More importantly, the book assures its readers that life will go on after a hysterectomy and that there are many options available for women to help them feel better, stronger and live longer, healthier lives.

I've found many books on natural menopause, but there is not enough written about surgical menopause which is drastically different. This book is written by someone who experienced it for herself and is in the medical profession. Great information about how our bodies work (ovaries, adrenal glands, etc) before and after menopause. It includes a great explanation of the role each hormone plays and what happens in it's absence. She discusses options for those who can take HRT and for those who cannot. Plus, she includes suggestions for just healthy living in general. A great book!

"Gift of Hope",
By
This review is from: Sudden Menopause: Restoring Health and Emotional Well-Being (Paperback)
In "Sudden Menopause," Debbie DeAngelo educates women with a clear and comprehensive understanding of what sudden menopause means exactly, while offering a supportive guide to navigating themselves toward a healthy lifestyle.
Debbie also offers women various coping strategies regarding some of the changes related to sudden menopause. In particular, Chapter 5: "Making It Through the Maze of Dietary Supplements," provides women with an array of knowledge about nutrional supplements. Because of Debbie's expertise and knowledge regarding sudden menopause, I have had no doubts referring my family and friends to her. Why keep a good thing a secret? Right? Besides Debbie truly has given women a "Gift of Hope" -- go ahead, share it with others.

A book every woman should read,
By
This review is from: Sudden Menopause: Restoring Health and Emotional Well-Being (Paperback)
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 which made my body go into sudden menopause . I had been suffering with early menopausal symptoms night sweats for a couple of years. This is a terrific book it also gives you information on how to talk to your doctor, nutrition and weight management, keeping your heart healthy, and insight on vitamins, herbs, and supplements. The writer is a person who has been there herself and is always willing to share with other women her thoughts ,information and support they need to adjust to the impact it has on their lives.
There are a lot of books printed each day about menopause but this one is the best it gives you a personal and professional point of view. I highly recommend every women should read it from cover to cover. The information I found inside helped me get through my cancer treatments and as of this year I am a 13 year survivor. This is a book that you can always use as a reference material for medical information at anytime. From begining to end the reader can navigate easily from each chapter to the next. I enjoyed the book very much and learned a lot and would hope that other women would do the same.
