A double locked-room mystery,
By
This review is from: Suddenly At His Residence (Paperback)
Locked room mysteries have always been a particular favourite of mine, and this book is doubly delicious since there are two of them within the space of one book. Ms. Brand is an excellent writer and she writes in the style of the Golden Age writers such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. Her books are always very clever, and never easy to figure out. This one is no exception. It is an English country manor mystery with a cast of zany characters who become the sole suspects for the murder of the family patriarch. Inspector Cockerill comes in about a quarter of the way through the book, and even he is stumped for a time. But when another murder happens, he begins closing in on his suspect. The backdrop to this book is the Blitz that occurred in England during World War II. And when the war meets the country estate, that's when all becomes clear. This is a clever, tricky little puzzler.
