This review is from: Suddenly Last Summer (Audio CD)
Acoustical standards all very well done. Produced by Andrew Worboys, whose piano accompaniment is second to none. This ouvre is in the tradition of Astaire/Oscar Peterson/Norman Granz really different versions of pop hits. I'm just amazed at how Jimmy's voice fits so well with these intimately done pieces. His voice has the magic of
swooping and fluttering, whooping it up and then coming down to an Elvis like sensitivity all within the same song. This time sans drum machines and synthesizers. The second version of Motherless Child is of the dance-track variety and even it is done in this different style. My favorites from the cd are:
My Heart Belongs to Daddy-the Cole Porter song and Walkin' After Midnite-The old Patsy Cline hit from the early sixties done with snare brush and upright bass.
If I ever win the lottery I'm gonna commission a concert bringing together Marc Almond/Jimmy/Bette/the Dame/the Boy and Andy to do GRRRRL songs from the early 60's(especially those Ronettes-Crystals-Bobby Sox & the Blue Jeans-Darlene Love-etc)This time they get the London Disco treament. I don't understand why it hasn't been done, already. Hey,The Fabs even did new versions of Postman and Baby It's You. Anyway I digress.
It is really good to know that since 1984 Jimmy Somerville has survived all sorts of marketing and media trends from MTV. vinyl, 12"s, cd's, mp3s, the demise of record stores,as everyone is shopping on-line now, and the demise here in the states of the classic gay/disco club as everyone is meeting on-line instead of face to face. Anyway, forgive my rambling, It's just that everytime I hear Jimmy's voice it reminds me of dancing in a clandestine little club deep in the city to Smalltown Boy. Enough said, I'm all weepy now.
Loved It Jimmy!
