5.0 out of 5 stars Suddenly! is an absolute delight.
Colin McNaughton's book, Suddenly! is an absolute delight from start to finish. The illustrations are precious, especially the ever present smile on Preston's face and the look of chagrin on the wolf's face. I liked the book because of its predictibility. Young children love that repetition. My five year old and eight year old were very happy to exclaim,...

3.0 out of 5 stars cute little story...but...?
I got this book in hopes it would be a helpful tool in learning Vietnamese. The text is simple enough, but my Vietnamese friend kept giving me alternative translations because she was skeptical that it was the best translation into that language. Not that I personally could judge... However, I am looking for more of these parallel texts between Vietnamese and English...

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun, March 1, 2001
This imaginative book tells of an innocent little pig followed around the neighborhood by a hungry and scheming wolf. Each page shows Preston walking around the neighborhood seemingly in imminent danger (connoted by the words "when suddenly!" with "suddenly" in big bold type). As noted above, this is almost the pig and wolf equivalent of the Road Runner and Wiley Coyote (except the pig never plots against the wolf), and there are similarly benign results for the pig and violent injury to the wolf. The "violence" is cartoonish, but it's there (wolf is run over by his own steam roller, Billy the Bully gets bitten instead of our hero, Preston, the wolf crashes to the floor, and heavily bandaged wolf heads off to "wolf hospital): You may or may not believe such material is appropriate for your child. We thought it was alright, and the "Suddenly!" hook is a lot of fun (especially for you dramatic readers out there). Big, colorful, sometimes "Mad Magazine" style pictures in its 26 pages. This would also be a very good book for the beginning reader

The illustrations are precious, especially the ever present smile on Preston's face and the look of chagrin on the wolf's face. I liked the book because of its predictibility. Young children love that repetition. My five year old and eight year old were very happy to exclaim, "Suddenly!" and "Silly me!" after just one reading. I can't wait to read some of McNaughton's other Preston books.

easy reading level , but enough twists in the good humored plot to keep it interesting. If you like this, check our "the Trouble with Boys"

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Engaging!, December 18, 2011
Suddenly! is the story or Preston Pig and his numerous near-misses with an unfriendly wolf. Follow along as he innocently thwarts the wolf's attempts to catch him and ultimately ends up safe again at his home, in his family's arms.

The pictures are lovely and engaging. With or without being able to read, children can enjoy and glean the story from the illustrations alone. But then, why enjoy just the pictures when the writing itself is so engaging and action-packed? This is a FANTASTIC book for anyone who likes to embellish when he/she is reading to a child.

Suddenly! is fun for everyone, readers and spectators alike. It's easily a contemporary of my generation's Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: Anniversary Edition or Quick! Turn the Page!. Bring this book into your child's life and you'll be giving them a classic to stay with them long after it has been read to pieces.

You will read it many times and reflect upon the power of luck. Does luck favor nice people? What happened to Billy the Bully? Read it to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really funny and cute, August 3, 2008
This review is from: Suddenly! A Preston Pig Story (Hardcover)
Preston is out doing his daily stuff, when SUDDENLY! he changes his mind and doesn't get harmed by the wolf stalking him.

This book is full of cartoon violence, as the poor wolf (yeah, right) gets more and more injured while trying to harm the lucky Preston.

The timing in this book is perfect, and it's great for those more interactive storytimes.
