Book Description

November 1, 2004
Millions of readers share a daily relationship with Lynn Johnston and her cartoon family, the Pattersons. Suddenly Silver: Celebrating 25 Years of For Better or For Worse now allows these faithful friends-and new readers, too-to honor that long association through a one-of-a-kind collection of strips and Johnston's musings and comments about her real life and how it's reflected in one of the cartooning world's most loved and followed families.Suddenly Silver is divided into three sections using cartoons from the strip's early, middle, and recent years. This insightful structure enables readers to revisit favorite earlier strips and to watch the development of storylines and the growth of characters over the years. Throughout it all, readers will find the same focus on everyday family life humorously portrayed through the good and the not-so-good days. All the cherished characters are present, including parents Elly and John; their children and grandchild; Grandpa Jim; and the dogs, Farley, Edgar, and Dixie.Johnston's thoughts about them, their individual development, and their familial evolution makes Suddenly Silver particularly captivating. As Lynn describes her work, readers get to share in the Pattersons' rendition of real life, through the heartwarming and the humorous, the tragic and the triumphant. This book, like the cartoon it honors, will make readers smile while emphasizing what's important in life. For Better or For Worse: What a run! What a celebration! What a future to look forward to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Retrospective, November 19, 2004
By
This review is from: Suddenly Silver: Celebrating 25 Years of For Better or For Worse (Paperback)
"Suddenly Silver" is a wonderful retrospective of the 25 year run of the "For Better of For Worse" comic strip. In it are thoughts and memories from not only Lynn but her whole family, as they all reflect on the effect the strip's fame has had on their lives and what it has meant to them. Included is a selection of strips ranging from the beginning of the strip up through Elizabeth's college graduation. One note: for anyone who is an avid collector of Lynn's works, this book does not contain but a couple of pages of strips past the birth of Meredith, where the last collection "Reality Check" ended - this is just a retrospective, not a new collection. Guess we'll have to wait until March for that! But as a retrospective, it is excellent and will not disappoint the real fans - highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Silver - Gold!, January 1, 2005

portledgesteven "portledgesteven" (Carbondale, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Suddenly Silver: Celebrating 25 Years of For Better or For Worse (Paperback)
I don't remember when I started reading FBoFW, but I've been reading it so long it's been a part of every day for (sigh) a quarter of a century. The family has been so real I often wondered how many of the stories were about the Patterson family and how many were fiction, and this book answers some of those questions. I remember a strip, which is part of this collection, of Elly and John lying in bed wondering whether they were dealing with young Michael in the best way, agonizing over the decisions they were making. Then in the last frame, cut to Michael lying in his bed thinking it must be wonderful to be a grownup because you always know everything!
The strips are nice memories, though some of the cuts between topics may leave new readers wondering about the gaps. The new essays about family members add interesting facets to some of the stories in the strip and how it evolved from a nice (though insightful) strip about a young family into commentaries about life, death, society and every family's wishes. Johnston lost some fans when she embraced some of these issues, but she gained millions more.
I know I'll miss FBoFW when Lynn Johnston retires, but the decades we've shared have been wonderful, and I look forward to the stories she'll tell between now and then.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great stroll down memory lane, November 26, 2004
By
This review is from: Suddenly Silver: Celebrating 25 Years of For Better or For Worse (Paperback)
I have been a fan of For Better for Worse for the longest time. Although I really do prefer some "new strips", this Treasury was a wonderful; stroll down memory lane.

Sure, I had seen all the strips before, but it was great to read them again (some I had even forgotten about).

Its interesting to see how the author has grown in both her drawing and her storylines.

The little blurbs from family members were a nice touch, although I would have hoped for a little more in-depth comments from some of them. Still, this is a great book. Nice and thick loaded with wonderful, wonderful strips.
