4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying British mystery, September 3, 2010
By
Ron "mvg@whidbey.com" (Whidbey Island, WA United States) - See all my reviews
Plot: Detective-Chief Superintendent Tom Pollard of New Scotland Yard goes to a sleepy village in the English moor country for what he thinks will be a quiet vacation. But his plans are ruined when some hikers discover a very modern skeleton in an ancient Celtic grave site outside of town along a recently re-opened walking path across the moor. At first the local authorities think the skeleton is a gruesome practical joke, but when the evidence points to murder, they ask Pollard to take charge.

Pollard's investigation is hindered by the aggressively uncooperative villagers, who lead him to believe that someone has something to hide -- something worse than a mere skeleton. Pollard must race against time to solve the compelling case -- before the killer strikes again.

Originally published in 1978.

Review: A well-written, easy to take British mystery that provides a few pleasant hours of diversion. The detective is intelligent and the list of suspects well delineated and easy to keep track of. The background of the newly restored moor walking trail was interesting, and the accompanying map of the terrain helpful to visualize the area being written about.
