Terrific Sudoku Book, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Sudoku to Boost Your Brainpower Presented by Will Shortz: 100 Wordless Crossword Puzzles (Paperback)
*****
This book is a steal at the bargain price, but worth even the retail price. There are 100 sudoku puzzles organized into "Light and Easy", "Moderate", "Demanding", and "Beware! Very Challenging!". They are large grids with only one puzzle per page, easy to work.
If you are a beginner, this probably isn't the best book for you, because it's light on technique. There is a cursory explanation about sudoku, but you really should be familiar with basic sudoku and basic techniques before you tackle this book.
A nice feature of the book is that there are eight complete puzzle walk-throughs, where explanations for each step of solving the puzzle are written out. I used this book as my second Sudoku book, and as such, it was perfect!
Definitely recommended.

Sudoku puzzle, December 20, 2007
Like many i have taken to Sudoku with an addiction. I have been through a few sudoku books only to write a review for one by Will Shortz. The 100 puzzles range from easy to somewhat difficult; for a beginner you have the ability to gradually step up.
The introduction falls short as it does not contain the may trick: Double Pairs; Multiple Lines; Naked pairs; Hidden Pairs; X-Wing; Swordfish; Forcing Chains and Nisho. One needs to be aware of these techiniques to get the more challenging puzzles solved.

Brain power, October 7, 2008
This review is from: Sudoku to Boost Your Brainpower Presented by Will Shortz: 100 Wordless Crossword Puzzles (Paperback)
I look for Sudoku books with three qualities. First, I want puzzles that have only one solution. If I find a book that includes puzzles with more than one solution I discard it. Two, I want books with grids large enough that I can enter candidates in the cells. Third, I want books with challenging puzzles. Many of the descriptions on Amazon omit such info.
I prefer grids that are about 4 ½" x 4 ½". The grids in my newspaper are about 3" x 3" (which is tolerable because not many candidates are needed).
Shortz's Sudoku to Boost Your Brainpower: The puzzles have only one solution; the grids are 4 ½" x 4 1/2", and 25 are "Light and Easy," 25 "Moderate," 25 "Demanding," and 25 "Beware! Very Challenging." This is a good book for beginners: It includes step-by-step solving guides for eight of the puzzles.
