Book Description

2008
New softcover edition. Sue Barton, Rural Nurse. At twenty-three, high-spirited and courageous young Sue Barton goes to practice in the White Mountains - working with Dr. Bill Barry. Bill had proposed persistently and at last, gladly, Sue decides to marry him and help him with his country practice. But fate, in the form of personal tragedy, a typhoid epidemic, and the hostility of the town to Bill as a doctor, step in to complicate their lives. It is a wonder that a hurricane could lead not to further tragedy but to a potentially exciting future for Sue, Bill, and all of Springdale.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best, September 20, 2010
This review is from: Sue Barton Rural Nurse (Sue Barton Series, Volume 4) (Paperback)
One of the best of the Sue Barton series, this novel focuses on Sue Barton's new career as a nurse in the small village of Springdale, NH. After a year at the famous Henry Street Settlement in New York City, Sue is ready to marry Dr. Bill Barry and get on with life in the mountains, working side by side with him as a visiting nurse -- but the tragic death of Bill's father means that their wedding must be postponed, and the outbreak of a typhoid epidemic leads Sue to find a way to finance her own career, so that she can be by Bill's side. Her travails in trying to find a sponsor for her work, her tenacious detective efforts to figure out the source of the typhoid outbreak, her struggles to help her friend Marianna find a life in the mountains, all make for engrossing, often amusing reading. Even as an adult I return to these novels, partly for the stories and the characters, partly for that window into a time not so far before my lifetime, which calls to me as simpler, more naive -- but no less compelling for that. Your kids -- especially your daughters -- will love these books, and so will you!
