A great late-night album, January 9, 2009

Daniela Romo's first CD in three years features a neat concept: Latin pop hits (including songs made famous by Franco De Vita, Laura Pausini and Cristian Castro, among others) are presented in a stripped-down, cabaret-style setting. It feels like being in a Cuban nightclub in the '50s, even though the material is contemporary. Romo's lovely voice is as distinctive as always, and she really reinvents the material. The nostalgic mood is so strong, you even stop and think at times, "Oh wait, this is actually a modern song!" This is the type of disc that would perfectly complement a candlelit dinner for two.
