4.0 out of 5 stars Enter Anacrusis, April 13, 2007
This review is from: Suffering Hour (Audio CD)
Progression and technical proficiency have long been an important part of extreme music, but you usually tend to find those elements in death metal bands like Cynic, Atheist, Believer, and of course Death. For whatever reason, I just never look to thrash bands to find progressive music. Anacrusis was, without a doubt, a thrash metal band. They were also, without a doubt, an extremely technical and progressive band. Anacrusis was years ahead of their time. They took the straightforward thrash sound and fused it with plenty of musical and vocal experimentalism, creating a complex and engaging variation of thrash metal that set them apart from the rest of the pack. Much of the credit for this goes to singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Ken Nardi.

Released in 1988, Suffering Hour was the band's debut album. This is much more of a straightforward thrash metal album than the band's later efforts, but you can definitely tell that there was more to Anacrusis's sound. Suffering Hour is a very raw, very aggressive album that still maintained a high level of technicality. The lyrics are almost juvenile in their violence (see "Butcher's Block" and "Annihilation Complete (Disemboweled)", but that was fairly common in metal at the time. The only real drawback here is the sound quality, which is quite poor. The version of Suffering Hour on CD isn't an official release, and the audio is demo quality at best. Hopefully someone will get around to (officially) remastering and reissuing this album one day.

I highly recommend Anacrusis to all thrash and/or progressive metal fans. If you're into old school bands like Testament, (old) Metallica, Watchtower, Cynic, Atheist, Believer, Sanctuary, and Death, or even newer bands like Mercenary and Nevermore, you should definitely check out Anacrusis. You're probably better off starting with Screams and Whispers and working your way back to Suffering Hour, as this album isn't the best introduction to the band.
