Editorial Reviews

Finnish gothic/roc outfit Silentium are back with their 2003 record and probably their finest yet! A concept story develops as a play and wrapped with hard rocking progressive, gothic and even melodic death metal. Spikefarm. Phduk.2006

5.0 out of 5 stars Between good and great, August 4, 2008
This review is from: Sufferion - Harmatia of Prudence (Audio CD)
This is the second product I've purchased from this band, and they are well on their way to becoming one of my favorites. This release is a concept album, involving the apparent seduction of a sailor and his lady-love Prudence by a dark spirit named Scoria. The songs are interspersed evenly between dramatized audio scenes (voices and so on), so you have eight of each for a total of 16. The scenes are fairly well done, something you might get from a movie, but ultimately I didn't find the story overly compelling. Which is fine for me, because the music itself is much more important.

So about the music, each song has a very well-crafted melody. Not excessively complex, as with some progressive rock, but easily enough to get beyond the same ole blah blah of gothic metal's less-inspired creations. These tunes are stirring and dramatic. Some artists make the mistake of thinking cool instrumentation automatically makes good music, but this band is not one of them. They DO have good instrumention though, to add icing to the cake. Hard guitars, crisp accoustics, swirling strings- which add to the album's post-rennaisance feel. The songs are sung in equal part by the female and male leads. The female's voice goes into nice soprano airs, but has good body as well. The male lead's tenor is clean at times, somewhat growly at others, but it always seems to fit. Together the singers are strongly reminiscent of Lacuna Coil; there are at least a couple great duets.

I'd say the band's melodies bring it close to the very best. What's more, the semi-growly male vocals land it evenly between "mostly female" bands like Nightwish or Within Temptation, and "beauty and the beast" bands like After Forever, Epica, Tristania, etc. There should be a little something here for any lover of this genre; definitely give it a try.

Also check out the band's latest, "Seducea", which is even better!
