Book Description

From the award-winning and best selling author of the "Nature of Grace" thriller series (Untraceable and Uncontrollable).

Choke is the 2nd novelette in the BREATHLESS teen thriller series.

Exhale #3 is coming July 2014.

"...mix Hugh Howey's Wool with Under the Never Sky and Across the Universe" for a great teen thriller."

It is a 15,000 word young adult thriller that combines the dystopic and science fiction genres.

For centuries, the world outside the Biome has been unlivable. Today, marks the first time anyone will attempt to leave the suffocating ecosphere. Eria is not worried because her scientist father has successfully tested the new Bio-Suit many times. It's a celebratory day until something goes horribly wrong. In the midst of tragedy, Eria uncovers a deep conspiracy that affects the very air she breathes.

If those responsible find out what she knows, they won't stop hunting her until she takes her last breath.

Part teen romance, part science fiction, and part dystopian, the Breathless novelette series will have you holding your breath to find out what happens next.

What Are Readers Saying?

"Intrigue, deception, romance, action, all mixed up to create a riveting story."

"If you mixed Partials , Under the Never Sky, and a smidgen of A Million Suns, this would be the ending result."

"The Breathless series has left me...breathless."

"The story has a pleasing completeness, like a single episode of a long-running TV series, which bodes well for further novelettes."

I'm not exactly sure what to say about Suffocate. Each time I've sat down to write my review, I become irritated because knowing that I have to wait . . . and wait for the sequel is killing me.

When Shelli (S. R. Johannes) emailed me and said she wrote a novelette, I was like cool. I never expected Suffocate to leave me on the edge, begging for more. In what is 15,000 words which is roughly 50 pages, Johannes, created a world, killed off a major character, added suspense, mystery and love and completely shocked me.

Suffocate is the story of Eria and her scientist father, Duke. For centuries, the world has been unlivable, forcing people to live in a Biome. Eria has never known what real grass feels like or ever touched a real tree. She's never felt the sun touch her face when it rises early in the morning. Eria lives in a bubble.

Ash, Duke's assistant, knows everything there is to know about Duke and Eria - so when things take a turn for the worse, Eria knows she can only trust one person - Ash!

When Duke, creates a suit that allows people to walk outside the Biome, everyone is excited. A suit like this would likely to cause problems, especially for the man who controls the oxygen distribution . . . dun dun dun. When Eria and Ash figure out the oxygen is killing people, the puzzle starts falling together rather quickly.

The only thing left for Eria is to leave the Biome, but how can she without a suit?

Suffocate is an absolute must!

A compelling six chapter novelette that will catch your attention from the very first page and leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment. Eria is nervously awaiting her dad's big moment, when he walks out of the only home she has ever known, the BioDome. The suit he has created can withstand any of the environmental problems of the outside world. When his big moment arrives, Eria is there, watching proudly. Then things in the dome go very wrong, very quickly, and her entire world is changed. What was her dad really involved with? What does his young assistant, Ash, know? I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel! Note: Very well written and edited. [YA Book Hoarder Blog]

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick, exciting sci-fi read! June 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If novels are like a television series or mini-series, a novelette is like a single episode. Suffocate didn't waste any time in getting to the heart of the story: a terrible accident, and Eria's frantic search to discover what went wrong, accompanied by her father's intern, Ash. As they search through the mysterious innards of the Biome for the truth, they are pursued by mysterious baddies, and lots of crazy sci-fi discoveries are made amidst nonstop action. There's even a brief moment of romance squeezed in. And then it winds up with a great twist ending that I kind of suspected (but not really).

This book was fun, fast and furious. I liked reading about the world of the Biome, and even though the book is short, the world-building was decent and the pacing was good. I never felt like I was being rushed or that the story was being crammed into a too-small space; this is just one of those stories that didn't need 100,000 words to tell it properly.

If you're looking for a quick, exciting sci-fi read to fill a couple hours by the pool or on a rainy day, I'd recommend picking this one up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Novelette..Worth every penny May 25, 2012
By Crystal
Format:Kindle Edition
I first fell in love with S.R Johannes writing style after reading her book Untraceable. I was very excited to read her newest piece of work Suffocate. The book was very short, however the author managed to pack a lot of excitement into this short story. She quickly captured my interest with her description of the current condition of the world and the ecosphere where people now live. The main character Eria, is a unique character and by the end I felt like I had connected with her character, I knew I was going to want to know what happens with her and be excited to read the next novelette. I was so pleasantly surprised by how many twist and turns the author was able to fit into this story. She revealed enough to get the reader interested while leaving enough unknown to make the reader hungry to read the next part of the story. I did guess the reasoning behind the accident fairly quickly after starting the book having read the goodreads description however I did not feel like that took away from the book as I still wanted to see what Eria would do. The twist at the end is a big one that I would have never guessed. I cannot wait to read the next part of the story and I urge you to get a copy of Suffocate from amazon, you can read it within an hour or so and I promise you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars This little novelette certainly packs a mean punch. July 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Eria lives inside the Biome, a structure where people have lived since D-day. Several generations have passed since that day, and now Eria's father has finally completed a Bio-suit that will allow them to return to the world outside. A world that its poison and heat. Everyone is celebrating because he will be "the first man to step out of the artificial ecosystem in almost a century." But something goes wrong and in the blink of an eye, her dad to ashes. Literally. Before letting her grief drown her Eria sets out to uncover the truth about the accident, and what she uncovers is darker than she could've imagined.

This little novelette certainly packs a mean punch. Intrigue, deception, romance, action, all mixed up to create a riveting story. Eria was a surprisingly strong character. She's fun and loving with her family, has a cute crush on her dad's assistant, and when the tough gets going she steels herself and sets emotions aside to survive. Ash was very cute, and I was glad that he got a bigger part than just of romantic interest. He also shows to be very valiant and not afraid to fight back. The short glimpses we get of the other characters, were really well done. I found myself feeling bad for her Nana, and when her dad died I felt sad. Point is, that in just a few pages I was emotionally invested in this story, and that's something I know is really hard to accomplish when one is writing. So kudos to Johannes!

The ending left me scrambling and searching all over the place for when the sequel would come out. The Breathless series has left me, well...breathless. If I have any complains about this is that I would've love it to be a longer work. I can't wait until the next installment comes out. I'll be waiting for Choke (The Breathless 2)!

1.0 out of 5 stars end comes pretty soon
As the plot comes together the book ends. Which, i suppose is fine since Its pretty obvious what the story is, so there isn't that much to make the reader even want more.
