It works!,
By Arnold C. Mendez, Sr. (acmendezsr@aol.com) (Corpus Christi, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
In the last 8 months I've lost 35 + lbs eating the Sugar Buster's way (I'm 46 years old, use to weigh 230 lbs. now I weigh 193 lbs). I don't want to call it a diet because you are not dieting. A diet only works as long as you are on it. This is a new way of eating. Their are so many choices that you never tire of the SB approach. I'm presently working on my Master of Science Degree in Biology and can verify that the SB works from biological point of view. I have always excercised and could not keep the weight off. After following the guidelines in the book I'm eating chicken, steak, whole wheat bread, eggs, lots of veggies, almost all the fruit I want and Im still losing weight. The SB way is not a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. It is well balanced and full of fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and the right type of fat. I found that the sugar addiction is easy to break and once broken, culinary life is still enjoyable. This "diet" works because you can eat the SB way from now on. The book is well written and very informative. It is a must read for anyone interested in why the American public is steadly putting on weight. Buy the book it will change your life!

It worked for me,
By Mary Bricker (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
It's hard to argue with success. The authors premise is that excessive insulin levels in your blood is what causes your body to store fat and elevate cholesterol levels. Since I started on this diet 3 months ago my cholesterol went down 35 points. I've lost 11 pounds. And it has "cured" my diabetes. If I follow the diet, my blood sugar stays completely normal. It's also one of the most sensible eating plans I've ever come across. I still eat carbohydrates, but they are whole grain or whole wheat now. The only thing I've had to give up is sugar, which was easier than I thought it would be. Pretty amazing for a lifelong chocoholic. The fact that I can still eat cheese, peanutbutter and other tasty foods makes it fairly easy. If you want to lose weight, lower your cholesterol, or get your diabetes under control, give it a try. This book has done everything for my health the authors said it would.

this is no quick fix! but it makes sense!,
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
Hasn't anyone read the whole book? Having had a weight problem all my life, I feel I have tried virtually every thing there is, not only to lose weight, but eat right. What a lot of people like myself want is a quick fix to a weight problem that did not happen overnight. Like other overweight people, I was looking for the "magic" diet/pill that would let me wake up one day skinny. Guess what, it doesn't work that way. I didn't become fat overnight, nor will the reverse happen overnight either. The one word missing in all of the negative reviews is moderation. Of all the programs that you can do on your own, I have found that this works, if you use moderation. It does allow more fat than others and virtually eliminates sugar as we know & love it, but it also promotes eating natural grains, fresh fruit & vegetables, & lean cuts of meat. And yes you can have dessert! It's up to the reader to understand that just because you can have nuts doesn't mean to eat the whole bag! Nor does it mean to eat a whole stick of butter with a loaf of whole wheat bread! Moderation is the key here, along with the other things we lazy Americans hate to do, exercise, drink lots of water and eliminate caffiene. I love the fact that I can still enjoy a little butter with my roll, but it's up to me to decide how much. Also, for those of you experiencing headaches, it's from the caffiene elimination, not the sugar, that's why a bag of M&M's works to get rid of it! So for all you naysayers, when you find the "perfect" diet that melts it all away no matter what you eat or how much, let me know, but until then, this is the lifetime way to eat for me.

Best diet i've ever found,
By ASHER B GALLOWAY MD (Douglasville,Ga) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
I started this diet in mid Jan,99.I weighted 299 lbs(5 ft 10 in)and my cholesterol was 286(should be below 200).With modertate exercise by June I was 235 lb,and my cholesterol was 184.I took no medication except niacin,500 mg a day.I still am 234 lb today.I stopped exercising which I need to lose wt.This diet makes more sense to me,medically and from a scientific viewpoint than any other diet I've encountered. It tends to get lumped into the same category as the high fat and protein and low carb diets. This is simply incorrect,as reading the book will quickly show you.this is not a fad diet!I eat plenty of whole grains, brown rice, vegetables, and fruits and still lose wt.I have been a doctor for 26 yrs,and i have recommended this book to so many of my patients our local bookstore can't keep it on the shelf.

The Easiest and Most Successful Diet I Have Ever Been On,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
I read all 169 reviews of SUGAR BUSTERS that were in place here shortly after the first of February. The vast majority were very favorable. I then purchased the book. It is now March 6th, and I have lost 15 pounds! Of course, my weight loss has slowed during the last week, and I expect that it will go more slowly after the initial fast success. But since SUGAR BUSTERS is such an easy food plan to stay on, I am confident that I will continue to lose at whatever rate is right for me until I hit a weight that works for me. I am not bewitched by numbers on the scale and do not have a specified "goal weight" that I am trying to attain. If I end up at 150, that will be fine with me. I hit 200 at my heaviest (the end of last year). I was not a fat kid, but I have struggled with inexorable weight gain since the birth of my first child 23 years ago, and I typically couldn't stay on a diet for even one whole day. After each pregnancy, I was left worse off than before. My appetite was limitless; I snacked a lot on fats and carbs., and I drank Pepsi all afternoon and evening as well as at dinner. I never seemed to get really full at meals and would take second helpings most of the time, and even thirds. I ate when I was sad, and I ate when I was happy. I spent a lot of time thinking about food. Now, I can hardly believe it, but I get full with food still left on my plate, and I quit eating voluntarily! I feel the urge to snack between meals only very rarely, now. I used to LOVE potatoes and have fixed and eaten them in so many ways; mashed potatoes with butter and cream mashed in were one of my favorite "comfort foods". Now, I have not eaten potatoes in any form for a month, and guess what? I am getting along just fine without them. I am getting along just fine without the Pepsi, too. I have had no "sugary" foods for that whole time, too, except for some slightly sweet salad dressings on salads. And I am doing GREAT without them! My doctor had finally put me on blood pressure and cholestoral meds. last fall. He said if I would lose 20 pounds, my blood pressure might well go back down to normal the way it was before I gained all the weight. At the time, that seemed a far-fetched possiblity for me. After a few more weeks, I intend to go back to the doctor and see how my blood fats and pressure are. Perhaps I will be able to get back off of the meds. at some point after I have lost some more, perhaps not. Some who have followed SUGAR BUSTERS have reported that they have experienced that happy result. I had tried Weight Watchers once, but thought the meetings were just dumb time wasters, and the rules that went with that program turned me off completely. The Atkins Diet was too rigid, even strictly limiting a lot of fruits and vegetables. To say I am pleased with SUGAR BUSTERS is a huge understatement! This is the one and only diet I have ever been successful with, and it is so easy compared to other diets I am familiar with, that I believe I can stay on it for life. No weighing, measuring, counting, writing foods down in notebooks; just avoid certain "high-glycemic" foods to the greatest extent that you can. My mood is evener, now, also. I am more cheerful and have a sense of well-being that is historically rather foreign to me. I don't worry and fret about problems as I did before. I would never have thought that refined carbs. were affecting both my mood and my appetite so profoundly. I am now drinking water in place of the Pepsi and eating fruits and vegetables in place of the refined carbs, and I am quite proud of myself. One tip: whole wheat pitas and tortillas are a very good replacement for verboten white bread for sandwhiches. I enjoy them very much when I feel the need for a sandwhich. Along with SUGAR BUSTERS, get EAT YOURSELF SLIM by Montignac. The plan is the same, and the Montignac book is a bit more informative, IMO. Also, do a search on the WEB for more lists of low-glycemic foods you can eat and high-glycemic foods you should avoid. There are a few inconsistencies in the lists from one to another so you do need to use some of your own judgement about okay foods: example, some nix pasta and some say certain pastas are acceptable in moderation. I recommend both books above, unreservedly. This is the BEST food plan I have ever been on! Invest in the books and see for yourself!

The facts about weight loss that may "Rock Your World",
By A Customer
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
I was skeptical. Another "fad" book about losing weight? I thought, "oh sure, get in line with Dr. Atkins and Oprah". Should I buy it? Should I add it to my collection of weight loss reference material that's so comprehensive that I could start my own fitness library? I decided to purchase and read it anyway. Let's face it, I'm a junkie when it comes to books like these. (Hey, they help me understand why I've failed so many times at losing weight.)However, as I was reading Sugar Busters, it seemed to make total sense. It was logical and easily understood...and it was the first book written and supported by doctors that explained everything in detail. So I gave it's principles a try...and I'm glad I did. I'm writing this review as a person who speaks from experience after applying what I learned in Sugar Busters! Results speak for themselves....I lost 18 pounds in the first month. And now I can't wait for each new day. It's made losing weight less of a challenge and more fun! You can even choose to add moderate to aggressive exercise to your daily/weekly routines and expect even more dramatic results. Read it, digest it (no pun intended) and follow it's recommendations. You'll be happy you did!

It Works!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
My husband at age 36 was very healthy... except for a cholesterol level of almost 300. It had been there for nearly 3 years when his internist told him if he wanted to live past his mid 40's, he's better make a lifestyle change. Of course he had my husband's attention, and then he recommended this book. He said he had seen it work, and wanted us to try. Meanwhile, I was 35, had given birth to two children, and hadn't done anything to lose those extra pounds I'd hung on to after the birth of our last child. We both knew it was time to get serious about our health, weight, and physical appearance. So, we bought the book. I read it once. Then I read it again, and this time used a highlighter. Then I read it again, and took notes on the really important stuff. We started the diet on Aug. 1, 1999. We found ourselves on a "glucose low" for about the first 2 weeks. Then our energy started to rise and we felt like we could really do it. We were eating so well, however, that we wondered it if would really work. We couldn't really tell a difference until the end of the 3rd week. I noticed my watch fit more loosely than before, and by the end of 10 weeks, I had lost 12 pounds, my husband had lost 10. By Christmas I had lost 20 pounds, and my husband had lost 25 (a little too much). After 4 months on the diet, his cholesterol level was down to 137, and we felt great! It's been 14 months since we changed our lifestyle with SugarBusters, and I've kept off 25 pounds and my husband has kept off 20. We eat well, enjoy the flavor of our foods, and love to entertain to turn others on to the fun and benefits of this way of life. This book was WONDERFUL... easy to read, and easy to understand. It made the biological case for the basis of the diet, and gave lots of examples to help you really understand and apply it to your life. It is not a DIET in terms of "lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks". It truly is a lifestyle change, and one that has been a huge success for us. I hope you can find the same success!

Excellent eating plan,

I wanted to lose ten pounds in time for summer. I have been following the sugar busters plan for two weeks and I have lost 8! I'm never hungry. I don't consider it a diet because diets are frustrating. This takes no will power. I love it.

This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
This is the most unusual nutrition/diet book that I have read. Its strength is a reasonably thorough overview of how natural and processed sugars affect your body chemistry. Except for people with diabetes and hypoglycemia, some of this information will be new. I think it is a valuable book for people to read since surveys continue to show that most Americans believe that the way to cut down on their fat is to cut back on fats. As a result, sales of fat-free products are soaring along with waistlines, obeisity and weight-related diseases. One of the interesting factoids in the book was that middle-aged men around 50 have only 18 months more of life expectancy now in the United States than they did in 1900. This is true despite all of the advances made in health care that should extend life for those with cardiac disease and cancer. For example, did you know that eating excess sugar causes the body to make more cholesterol. Many people may be able to reduce cholesterol more with sugar reduction than with cholesterol-lowering drugs. Although it would have been nice to have taken a broader look at nutrition in this book, it is my understanding that it is correct that excess quickly-absorbed sugars (whether from Coca-Cola, corn or a candy bar) drive up your blood sugar level, cause your body to create insulin to store the sugar as fat, and suppresse the glucagen that causes your body to burn stored fat. There are excellent tables to show how these results vary after a high carbohydrate versus a high protein meal. Carbohydrates are turned by your body into sugar, even if they start out as starches. So you have to beware of baked potatoes as well as beer. Clearly, our health can stand a lot of improvement. It stands to reason that eating changes should be an important factor. While tens of millions diet, few actually succeed in keeping the weight off. This is one more sign that we are doing something wrong. The authors point out that sugars have been available to the masses for only a few generations. Prior to that, only the richest people suffered from too much sugar, bleached flour, and beer. As the rest of the world becomes wealthier, we face the risk of creating even more harm. I found the lists of what to eat more of and what to eat less of easy to follow and understand. I am not competent to comment on the recipes, fourteen day diet, and restaurant recipes. But if you are interested in such things, they are in the book. Be sure to learn the important lessons about avoiding excess sugar from this book. Then use that a springboard to learn more about what other nutritional changes can help you. I suggest Dean Ornish's book, Eat More, Weigh Less, as another good resource. He takes on the fat side of the intake equation in a thorough and useful way. After you have learned all about nutrition, go on to Dean Ornish's book, Love and Survival, on how human connections affect our health even more than nutrition does. Overcome as many stalls as possible about how you eat and relate to others to have the fullest, happiest, and most healthful life!

It makes sense - darn it!,
This review is from: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat (Hardcover)
Sugar, the darn stuff is everywhere. After reading this I hopped down to the supermarket to do my shopping and sugar is everywhere - in everything. Sure I thought Jam, other highly processed foods like cereals and so on would have it. But its in just about everything - from tins of plain tomatoes and kidney beans to bread. Cutting sugar from your diet can seem quite daunting at first. I mean - you feel like you are going to have to refuse everything because just about everything you buy for snack food or take away food seems to be forbidden. And then there was the terrible thought that I would miss things like chocolate too much. So I thought I would give the programme two months trial to see how I felt and I have to say two things - 1 - it works 2 - after a few days adjustment it is easy to follow. I don't crave for sweet things, feel hungry all the time, or be left feeling precious about making food choices. Moving from the testimonial into more review mode now - to summarise the technical explanations in the book - you get tired, hungry and irritable because sugar and highly processed carbohydrates raise your blood sugar and you get lots of sugar highs and lows. This also stops you losing weight because you store more fat...etc etc etc..... The book is short, easy to read, easy to follow. It has some simple diet plans you can follow if you don't know where to go next with this and some easy to remember instructions about how to read food packets at the supermarket. But once you know where to find the culprits it is pretty easy to avoid them. All in all WONDERFUL! |
