Finally a New CD!,
By John (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugar Candy Taxi (Audio CD)
After years of recording a number of albums on an obscure German label not distributed in North America, Kevin Coyne finally releases a new collection of songs on a new, more widely distrubuted label. It's about bloody time! I was unsure whether to give it 4 or 5 stars, but this stuff is so far beyond most pap recorded nowadays, I went with the latter. Kevin states that this CD was like a return to roots for him, and it really does seem like a blast from the past (it sounds alot like the songs on the Peel Sessions CD). About 1/3 of the songs are recorded with a 'rock' band including his sons, and they - to me - are often the strongest of the bunch. Another 1/3 or more are solo acoustic, and these are almost uniformly excellent too. The final third or so are acoustic with either a discordant sax or flute wailing behind Kevin: these don't always work, although 'Porcupine People' and 'Lancashire Song' are stand-outs. Kevin Coyne does it again here: he provides excellent lyrics and melodies, a very idiosyncratic guitar style, and a voice that - like Van Morrison's - has become more emotive and powerful with age. This really is a strong CD, with some patented Coyne touches and more than an occasional hint of discordance which forces you to listen carefully. This is intellegent folk/rock (for lack of a better term) music made for - if I may be so bold - a discerning audience, which is probably why he is almost unknown in North America. Like, for example, Graham Parker or Roy Harper, it's a crime this singer/songwriter isn't better known and appreciated. If you are familiar with his work, definitely buy this record; if you aren't, take a chance, I think you'll like it!

This is the type of album that seperates the cloth eared from the clued-in.It's a masterpiece and anyone who tells you different is a musical philistine who thinks Kenny G is great music. Buy it now.
