5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!, January 23, 2010
This review is from: Sugar Cookies: Sweet Little Lessons on Love (Hardcover)
I LOVE this book. We have a couple of other Amy Krouse Rosenthal books, but I think as a mom this one is my favorite. My five year old son got this as a birthday gift when he turned 4 and he really loves it too. The whole book takes character traits and gives definitions that relate to cookies so that kids can understand what they mean. For example, one of them goes something like "Trustworthy means if you ask me to watch your cookie until you come back, when you come back I will still be watching your cookie." Other traits are patience, honesty, courage, loyalty...and more. The illustrations are great and the definitions are so wonderful - exactly how you would try to explain them to a young child. I have referred back to this book when I'm reminding my son about these traits. I'll say, "remember in your cookies book how it says courage means...." I Highly recommend this for kids who are around 4-8. Moms will love it even more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Fun, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Sugar Cookies: Sweet Little Lessons on Love (Hardcover)
Sugar Cookies is a perfect Valentine's Day book giving meaning to words like tenderness, bliss, forgive, and considerate. The charming illustrations by a mother -daughter duo make this picture book oh-so scrumptious.

5.0 out of 5 stars How fun!, November 28, 2011

My sister told me about this book. A lady read it during her friend's funeral to all the family and friends, since it so well expressed the way the woman had lived a full life. I couldn't wait to get it for my grand kids. As excited as I am to make cookies and memories with them after we read the book, I am even more excited to introduce words into their lives that you rarely hear in this world of "reality shows". They learn the meaning of "adore, endearment, cherish, protect," just to name a few. And it's explained in a way that will reach into their little hearts and take root. I smell "sugar cookies". Yum!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from Books That Heal Kids, July 29, 2011
If you are interested in encouraging your children/students to become kinder....then this is a great series of books to buy. I love the idea of teaching kids character values through story. They also are going to gain an incredible vocabulary. I just bought this one and plan on getting the rest of the series. Not a lot of great character education books out there - this is in the top though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cookies as Metaphor for Love, May 9, 2011
A follow-up to `Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons', Amy Krouse Rosenthal again uses cookies as metaphor. This time around cookies are used to illustrate the qualities of love. Each page begins with a bold/capitalized word (heartfelt, compassionate, supportive, admire) that describes an aspect of love. The lead in word then is defined by linking it creatively to love. The illustrations combine animals and people to bring a warm, sweet, and tender feeling to the feel of the book. Great to use for writing activities that use a lead word to frame the message of each page. Great for 2nd grade on up, will need discussion to fully bring understanding to each term.

Sequel to Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great messages and Wonderful illustration!, January 27, 2011

Absolutely LOVE this book. I initially had the Christmas cookies book for Advent season, and then bought this one after the first of the year. The definitions of character traits or concepts related to 'what love is' are very well written in Amy Krouse Rosenthal's signature cookie metaphor. It is a perfect way to introduce the words and concepts to young ones in a way that they can 'digest' :). The illustrations are really very wonderful, too - each page seems to include animal characters as well as human, and there are many different ethnicities and family relationships represented.

I purchased this and other books by these authors for my granddaughter who is going to be a lower elementary teacher. She loves them and can't wait to use them in the classroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars This charming book with its delightful recipes for love will warm the reader's heart!, April 3, 2010
This review is from: Sugar Cookies: Sweet Little Lessons on Love (Hardcover)
A mother holds her arms out as her young boy runs toward her. A mother hen stretches out her wings and her chicks rush in her direction. Endearment is the word for it. "Come here, my sugar, my cookie, my sweet little morsel." A boxer pup licks the side of a bowl and a little girl shares the leftover cookie dough with him as she licks her little fingers clean. YUM! They were being considerate when they shared. A little cook worked diligently to make cookies for her horse. Her actions were heartfelt as she nestled up to her horse with her offering. The added sprinkles gave it just the right touch.

The cookies were very sad looking and an orange kitty cat cuddled up with a sad looking curly haired boy to give him a hug. He was compassionate toward the boy. Valentine's heart cookies are meant to be decorated. One little girl decorated while another leaned over her shoulder because "Admire means, I really look up to you and the way you are with your cookies. You remind me of what is good and possible in this world." There are many other recipes for love in this book including the ingredients, forgive, supportive, tenderness, adore, expansive love, constructive, unconditionally, unrequited, requited, connected, heartbroken, true love, selfless, bliss, cherish, and protect.

This charming book with its delightful recipes for love will warm the reader's heart. The author and illustrator have captured the essence of love and have imparted it to all the little cookies of the world. Each and every message was positive and affirming. The art work was very appealing with its many nostalgic touches, something that will have especial appeal to parents and grandparents. In the back of the book is a recipe for Sugar Cookies, a recipe that a parent can share with a child. This is one of those totally heartwarming books a parent or grandparent can share with the special little cookie in their life!
