Book Description

A story about the strength of one woman and the power of her relationship with her daughter as they overcome life's obstacles.

She’s been on her own for so long that when Darci Thompson’s 12-year-old daughter, Taylor, is diagnosed with a life changing illness, she must push past her self imposed walls to prove that Diabetes won’t define them.

With the help of new friends and Cam, a man who believes in her, Darci finds the strength to challenge the stereotypes and make a difference for her daughter. But letting Cam get close also means being vulnerable. Is Darci willing to face her own demons and take that risk once again?

Editorial Reviews

"An emotional story that reflects what thousands of real life children and parents have gone through and continue to experience--with an important message: we are not alone." ~ Angela Wallace, author of Elemental Magic

"Sugar Crash is a story that is rich and sometimes raw with honest emotion..."  ~Bette Lee Crosby, author of Spare Change

From the Author

Dear Reader,

This book is dear to my heart because it is based on the actual experiences of one of my dearest friends when she was a child and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Please know that despite the fact that some of the events are based on truth, this is a work of fiction. It is in no way meant to act as a medical reference book or to take the place of any doctor's opinion.
While diabetes pays a role in the story, it is not the entire story. And I hope you enjoy Darci's journey as she becomes the mother she needs to be while at the same time allows herself to be true to her own heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read April 3, 2012
By Aini
Format:Kindle Edition
Sugar Crash is about more than a mother and daughter learning to live with diabetes; it's about learning to lean on others in times of need. As a Type 1 diabetic myself, I definitely related to the daughter's struggle, but I was surprised to find that it was the mother, Darci's story that broke my heart. Knowing my own mother must have gone through the same emotions gave me a new perspective on one of the most emotionally wrenching times of my life. Most people can't understand if they haven't been there, but just as the people in Darci's life band together around her, I hope this story will touch many more hearts, and give us all a little insight into what is a very real story for so many children and parents out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sugar Crash Opened My Eyes April 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Elena Aitken is a writer with a gift for weaving a message within a story line seamlessly. This is a story that I will be sharing with my children - in hopes that they will have a better understanding of what Diabetes is and how to properly take care of their body. It's also opened my own eyes. As a mother and as a woman - this is a story I'm glad to have read.
I love the fact that proceeds will be donated to charity as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Obstacles in Life May 1, 2012
By Sandy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was engaging from the get go. The main character Darci was faced with many obstacles and challenges in her life but she showed that with the help of friends and some soul searching she was able to overcome and bring her life back together. She was able to be the strength that her daughter needed and was able to set the rigth example of thinking beyond their family but what they could do to help the greater community. I personally love books that show how adversity can bring about a positive outcome for more than just one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down! April 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book while on vacation in Aruba. I couldn't put it down. And as I sat on the beach, my son was playing with a boy who had a weird thing on his back. Turns out it was a gadget devised to protect his diabetes pump! The mother and I got to talking. I showed her that I was reading a book about kids and diabetes and she immediately downloaded a copy for herself! I couldn't put this book down! Darci, a single mother works hard to raise her daughter alone after her husband has died. Everything is going along pretty well until Taylor has a seizure which leads to her scary diabetes diagnosis. Obviously, this rocks their world! Taylor is hospitalized and has to learn how to give herself shots, how to monitor her blood sugar levels. And because Darci doesn't like to ask others for help, she finds herself in trouble professionally. Even though the book is about diabetes, I think it is really a survivor story. And it is also a story about learning to lean on others in a time of need. (There is also a hot coach in there, and the romance is fabulous!) This book is perfect for anyone who has had an experience with juvenile diabetes. Even teens will appreciate the story of how Taylor's friends rally round her when times are tough.

I was glad to see a book I could give to my little sister. We both have diabetes, and if you never had it as a kid you can't really get it. Every day we get finger pokes and shots. It really sucks.

So a book that actually tells this story was great. I gave it 5 stars as it told a fast and great story.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have a Sugar Crush! April 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was such a great story. I really connected with the main character, who is working hard to raise her daughter alone after her husband died a few years ago. Everything is rolling along pretty well for the two of them. Her daughter is smart, athletic and a good kid. Then they find out the daughter has diabetes and it rocks their world. Her daughter is in the hospital. Her job is in jeopardy. She's afraid she caused the disease. Once she figures out that she can't go it alone, that it's okay to get help from those around her, things start to look up. And it doesn't hurt that help comes in a very sexy package. (Her daughter's sexy soccer coach who has totally been crushing on her.) The combination of wondering if her daughter was going to be okay and if she was going to snap out of it and KISS the hot guy already kept me quickly turning the pages!!
And P.S. I LOVED the ending!!

5.0 out of 5 stars There's no sugar coating diabetes April 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I was truly impressed with the way Ms. Aitken handled the subject of new-onset diabetes so well. It wasn't a sappy or tragic or a "poor little me" approach, but presented in a sensitive yet "in your face" kind of way.

This is a beautiful and touching story about a family's struggle to deal with the fact that diabetes is now part of their lives, for it doesn't only touch the afflicted, but everyone around them. Bravo, to this author and her insight!

5.0 out of 5 stars not what I thought... April 4, 2012
By twinmum
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been a type 1 diabetic for 30 years now, and as I began reading this book I thought I would identify with the little girl who suddenly has her world tipped upside-down with the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. However, I really found myself identifying with the mom. Ms. Aitken's ability to develop her characters on such real levels make you feel like you are living right along side them, and that they are part of your life. I could not put this down. 3-cheers for a book that takes a real look at diabetes without the sympathy card.
