Book Description

She's been on her own for so long that when Darci Thompson's 12-year-old daughter, Taylor, is diagnosed with a life changing illness, she must push past her self imposed walls to prove that Diabetes won't define them.

With the help of new friends and Cam, a man who believes in her, Darci finds the strength to challenge the stereotypes and make a difference for her daughter. But letting Cam get close also means being vulnerable. Is Darci willing to face her own demons and take that risk once again?

A story about the strength of one woman and the power of her relationship with her daughter as they overcome life's obstacles.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An emotional story that reflects what thousands of real life children and parents have gone through and continue to experience--with an important message: we are not alone." ~ Angela Wallace, author of Elemental Magic

"Sugar Crash is a story that is rich and sometimes raw with honest emotion..."  ~Bette Lee Crosby, author of Spare Change

From the Author

Dear Reader,

This book is dear to my heart because it is based on the actual experiences of one of my dearest friends when she was a child and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Please know that despite the fact that some of the events are based on truth, this is a work of fiction. It is in no way meant to act as a medical reference book or to take the place of any doctor's opinion.
While diabetes pays a role in the story, it is not the entire story. And I hope you enjoy Darci's journey as she becomes the mother she needs to be while at the same time allows herself to be true to her own heart.

~Elena

Even though the book is about diabetes, I think it is really a survivor story. Renee Schuls-Jacobson  |  11 reviewers made a similar statement

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read April 3, 2012
By Aini
Format:Kindle Edition
Sugar Crash is about more than a mother and daughter learning to live with diabetes; it's about learning to lean on others in times of need. As a Type 1 diabetic myself, I definitely related to the daughter's struggle, but I was surprised to find that it was the mother, Darci's story that broke my heart. Knowing my own mother must have gone through the same emotions gave me a new perspective on one of the most emotionally wrenching times of my life. Most people can't understand if they haven't been there, but just as the people in Darci's life band together around her, I hope this story will touch many more hearts, and give us all a little insight into what is a very real story for so many children and parents out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sugar Crash Opened My Eyes April 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Elena Aitken is a writer with a gift for weaving a message within a story line seamlessly. This is a story that I will be sharing with my children - in hopes that they will have a better understanding of what Diabetes is and how to properly take care of their body. It's also opened my own eyes. As a mother and as a woman - this is a story I'm glad to have read.
I love the fact that proceeds will be donated to charity as well!

More About the Author

In no particular order, I am: a writer, a mother of twins, a swimmer, a wife, a volunteer, a runner, a friend, a triathlete, a daughter, a sister, a Brownie leader (recently retired), an auntie, a cyclist, employee and...

I'm trying to do it all and have it all because nobody said I couldn't. And even if they did, I probably wouldn't listen because I'm too busy.

I've been writing in one form or another since elementary school but although I always knew I wanted to be a writer when I grew up, instead I earned university degrees in Marketing and Psychology and writing got put on the back burner. After my twins were born I was buried in diaper changes, middle of the night feedings and mountains of laundry, so obviously it seemed like a logical time to start writing again. I guess it took me while to grow up.

I turned to non-fiction and became a regular contributor to local parenting magazines, published in four Chicken Soup for the Soul anthologies, and a compilation by Seal Press. It wasn't until 2005 that I tried my hand at writing fiction and wrote my first novel (at least since I was a kid). It's buried on my hard drive where it should be! And I just keep writing them. Nothing Stays In Vegas was the first novel that I've made available.

Besides my novels, you can read my work in:
Chicken Soup for the Brother and Sisters' Soul
Chicken Soup for the Runner's Soul
Chicken Soup for the Beach Lover's Soul
Chicken Soup: Christmas Magic
Chicken Soup: Hooked on Hockey
How to Put a Car Seat on a Camel
