Their best live album, and a great snapshot of the current band.,

With the addition of their new drummer and bass player (aka the band/duo "Big Business") in the late 2000's, the Melvins seem to have been rejuvenated. "(A) Senile Animal" and "Nude With Boots" rank with their best work (and although "The Bride Screamed Murder" doesn't, it still has some interesting new tracks). However, it's live where the new additions really make their true impact. I have been seeing the Melvins live since 1992 ($5 shows at the Nightbreak in SF's Upper Haight) and the current version of the band is the best yet, hands down, no debate.
In particular, the new two drummer combo makes the Melvins music much more striking (pun intended) and even heavier. They are now one of the tightest bands on the planet, able to stop and start on a dime (which when they are chugging along at full thunderous pace is quite impressive). The new songs are great and even their older songs seem more fully realized. This album nicely captures their new live sound, and is easily their best official live album to date. Buzz's riffs have never been more powerful and the drums POUND (I'm shortchanging the bass player too, who is also excellent, surpassing all their previous bass players). It focuses primarily on their new material, highlighting just how strong those new songs are. The Melvins have always been powerfully unique. If anything, they are now even more so. Highly recommended for fans of heavy, tight music.

No weak spot on this release: sounds great, great performances, great tunes and the booklet is another one of Mackie's super cool artsy productions, BUT it's less minimalist than their recent booklets in that it includes very cool b&w photos of the band tearing it up. Let's hope the Melvins keep it up for another decade or more!

If you are a fan of the first two records of the four-piece Melvins, this live CD is right up your alley. Songs from (a)Senile Animal and Nude With Boots are front and center here, and sound absolutely awesome live. Very cool versions of Tipping The Lion, Eye Flys, and Boris will satisfy yearns for classic Melvins songs. Also there is the Star Spangled Banner, previously only available as a limited 7 inch. All in all, nice collection, great price, from a band who never disappoints. My favorite is songs 8-11, the heart of the Senile Animal record, done in the same order as the original record. Heavy. Buy It.
