SUGAR RUSH by Elaine Overton focuses on Sophie Mayfield and Eliot Wright. Sophie and her family own a local bakery that manages to get new customers that were once customers of their rival, Fulton Foods. She hires a new pastry chef, Eliot, to help with her expanding business, but he accepts the job with an ulterior motive he's desperately trying to conceal from Sophie. While working together they discover they have more in common than pastries and Eliot realizes he has more to lose than he originally thought. He may lose his heart if his deception is revealed to Sophie.

While the focus of the story is the romance developing between Sophie and Eliot, there are other themes, such as loyalty, honesty, love, friendship and familial relationships revealed. Sophie considers her relationship with her family a necessity she tries to maintain, whereas Eliot considers his a responsibility he can do without and he tries to sever the family bond.

Overton writes with emotion and passion and makes the reader feel a part of the story, as if they were a character themselves. She tastefully and vividly describes the romantic scenes. I enjoyed her portrayal of the characters and story-telling style. Even though I enjoyed the story line and subject matter, I felt it lacked some of the gusto that I've grown accustomed to with this author. That's why I gave it a rating of a 3. I still would recommend to this read to others.

Bakery owner Sophie Mayfield is running the family business with the help of her grandmother Mae. Everyone else in the family wanted to sell the bakery but she was determined to make it a very prosperous business and be able to update the equipment in the process. Fulton Foods has been losing contracts to the Mayfield Bakery and is trying to buy them out but no dice for Sophie nor her grandmother Mae. Eliot Wright works for their family business Fulton Fields and his uncle is pressuring him to stop them at all costs which includes stealing the family recipe book. Eliot goes there and acts like he is the new chef that Sophie hired to do what his uncle wants and finds that he loves baking again and loves the family atmosphere. His uncle gets wind of it and blows his cover and makes threats to Sophie to try and get Eliot to see things his way. In the process of working there he falls in love with Sophie and she ends things with him. Eliot finally realizes that his uncle has been just dangling the CEO job in his face to try and control him and he decides to get back at him and destroy the family business by sending orders their way. He plans to prove to Sophie that he truly loves her and the family business is not more important than his feelings for her. Great love story with a few twists involving others who work at Mayfield Bakery who find love also.

Ms. Overton has done it again. The characters are interesting and the love between Eliot and Sophia was so sweet and the elevator scene was out of this world. I don't typically like mistaken identity stories, but this was a good story. I couldn't wait to see how it ended. Ms. Overton is an awesome writer and I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

This review is from: Sugar Rush (Kimani Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Eliot was in a sticky siuation and coming clean was not so easy. Trying to protect a company that he wanted to some day become his and the woman he love. Sophia had something to prove not only to herself but to her family and she would not let anyone stop her. This is a great story a real page turner and at the end of the day we all sometime need a sugar rush.
