After what felt like an eternity, I finally got my hands on the final volume of Sugar Sugar Rune the other day. I would finally discover if Pierre would survive, who would become Queen, and if Pierre & Chocolat were related. Most of the answers you could guess at, but one is actually somewhat surprising. I will say one thing: the Queen is different than in the anime ending.

However, I couldn't help feel that this volume was a bit rushed. We finally get to see the big meetings of the series, Chocolat & Glace( and savvy readers can guess who the other biggie is), but they only last for a few pages. One character pops up mid-volume & I'm hard pressed to tell if she's shown up previously in the series, and if she has, then she's only appeared briefly. We get all of the big resolutions that us readers could want, but the pacing just seems like it could have used maybe one more chapter to elaborate on them.

Still, it's a good ending and I was pretty much satisfied with it. There were a few deaths I wasn't expecting, but they were well done. I liked who ended up as Queen, as she seemed the more logical choice maturity-wise. I would have liked a short side story to see what else happened, but I'm pretty happy with what I saw.
