Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The first offering in a new series of historical romances, each set in a small American town, opens with the story of saccharine-sweet Rachel Sloane who travels to Valiant, Tex., in May 1882 and impersonates her malicious employer, Joanna Tharp, in order to keep Joanna's first flame from spoiling Joanna's new life in Richmond, Va. As Rachel masquerades as the despicable Joanna, she is charmed by the frontier town's stock characters (the madam with the heart of gold, the Annie Oakley-like frontierswoman) and of course falls deeply in love with Ben McGuire, the rejected swain that Joanna despises. Although the domestic details are lovingly rendered and the relationships are tenderly drawn, too much sweetness and not enough spice, coupled with needlessly melodramatic romantic complications prevent the novel from truly satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sugar and Spice is syrupy sweet!, May 27, 2004

This quick cute story definitely leaves you with the warm and fuzzies. I did find it somewhat disjointed between how the author relays one situation to the next, but it'll soon be overlooked as you're immediately endeared to the loveable quirky residents of Valiant, Texas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A keeper. I laughed, I cried, I didn't want it to end., July 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sugar and Spice (Paperback)
Seamstress Rachel Sloan falls in love with Ben McGuire through the letters he wrote to her boss, Joanna Tharp. When Joanna blackmails the lookalike employee into assuming her identity and returning to Valiant, TX, to break off the engagement to Ben, Rachel risks the deception to find out if the man is as wonderful in real life as he is on paper. For everyone who has thrown someone away in your life or has been thrown away, this book is a poignant reminder that you should keep love close and treasure it.
