3.0 out of 5 stars TIME AND TIME AGAIN, October 13, 2003
This review is from: Sugar Time (Audio CD)
The mysterious goings on in an old Victorian mansion outside Galveston, Texas posses an interesting and entertaining dramatization as to whereabouts of Maxwell Sweet's two assistance in his secret experiments. Maxwell's niece must uncover the clues in the disappearances and do it quickly before the police put a halt to her uncle's experiments into time travel. This audio CD contains three stories with our heroine, Sugar Sweet , and her exploits into time. Although the dramatization is not as polished as one might expect, it does provide some entertaining moments for the listener.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time Travel PLUS, November 14, 2002
By
G. Miki Hayden (NYC, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sugar Time (Audio CD)
Sugar is... well, sweet, and, for some reason, Sugar Sweet doesn't like to tell people her entire name. But, there you are, that's who she is, our protagonist. In SUGAR TIME, when Sugar arrives at her uncle's house to check up on things, she's stopped by the police. But, no problem--she explains her uncle is sick, so they all go in. Something is odd about the house though and Sugar's warnings make them wary. Are those cats called Chessies really cats? Or... something else? And what is that `thing' in the other room? Danger abounds.

The CD telling of SUGAR TIME consists of three stories, the first two about Ms. Sweet and her exploits as she is helped by her cousin Izzie Walton (his father loved fishing) and his cop partner Frank--as well as Japheth, whom Sugar has hired to give her a hand. This is the adventure of their lives and more utter peril than the police force could ever offer the two lawmen.

Author Smith has quite a long list of credentials, with stories in such publications as The Fifth Di... (her award winning novelette, Hidebound), Caliope, Twilight Times, and the Killer Frog contest anthologies. Her articles for writers and on the science fiction genre have appeared in Fiction Writers Guidelines, Inscriptions, Scavenger's Newsletter, and many
other print publications and online sites. Smith is a long-time participant in and observer of the SF/fantasy scene and her background is apparent in her latest lively trio of tales. A previous group of stories by Smith was issued in another audio project, Audio Version.

Smith's Sugar Sweet heroine is a smart and feisty young woman,
down-to-earth, but about to travel to other spheres. The stories are fun and take listeners both to the far-distance past and to places no one on earth has ever been before. I'd recommend the CD version as a better recording. Enjoy. G. Miki Hayden, author of the alternate history novel, Pacific Empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a fan of science fiction, but..., November 13, 2002
This review is from: Sugar Time (Audio Cassette)
As an avid reader of just about any genre, I happily discovered Sugartime and found it to be "not-your-run-of-the-mill" time-travel story by any stretch of the imagination! The episodes range from amusing to dead serious, keeping the reader alert not only for the next plot twist but also wondering if it will bring a smile or a furrowed brow. The manner in which the characters are drawn and the story line itself allow for possible pre-quels or sequels. I admit my favorite characters were the two creatures who communicated via mental telepathy. The ingredients consisting of a body or two for the stout-hearted, a mystery for the puzzle-seekers, and smile-producing humorous events, yet a serious science-fiction tale of adventure, all combine to produce a most enjoyable read.
