5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than debut
Tonic's first album, "Lemon Parade", was a very good album with a couple of excellent singles--namely "Open Up Your Eyes" and "If You Could Only See". While this follow-up effort didn't get as big a single as its predecessor, to me it is actually a better album from beginning to end. When I first heard this CD back when it came out, I was...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, But A Slide From Rock To Pop
If you liked Tonic's debut album "Lemon Parade", you may find "Sugar" too sweet for your tastes. As with a lot of rock bands, such as the Replacements and Everclear, it seems the progression of time takes Tonic further away from its rock beginnings.

Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable album, especially if you like hook-laden classic rock...

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than debut, November 11, 2001

Tonic's first album, "Lemon Parade", was a very good album with a couple of excellent singles--namely "Open Up Your Eyes" and "If You Could Only See". While this follow-up effort didn't get as big a single as its predecessor, to me it is actually a better album from beginning to end. When I first heard this CD back when it came out, I was surprised how good it really is.

Sure, the first single "You Wanted More" is excellent--melodic with an edge in parts. "Knock Down Walls" is a catchy, uptempo rock radio track. But the rest of the album is equally as good. "Future Says Run" is a memorable leadoff track, the title track is a nice mellow song, and "Queen" flat-out rocks. "Waiting For The Light To Change" is a track that I still rave about--a beautiful emotional track with a slower tempo. "Waltz With Me" is another fantastic slower track, while "Drag Me Down" is another good late-album rocker. All in all, I have to say that the average song on this album is better than the average song on "Lemon Parade". Both are good to great albums. And for sure, I hope Tonic gets more noteriety in the future. With future efforts like this one, they most definitely should.

Wow. Tonic has done it again. I didn't think they could write and produce an album as well as Lemon Parade but they did. In fact, this album is even better. I bought the CD the day it came out and I haven't taken it out of my stereo yet. Truly a great album which stands out from all the rest. I promise anyone of any age will love this album and become entranced in the powerful vocals. GET THIS CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe the Best CD I've ever owned, February 9, 2000

Every song is amazingly good -- catchy, well-written and unique. Every song is completely different from the rest of the songs. I bought the CD immediately when it came out, and now, at least 3 months later, it is the only thing I want to listen to. This CD is not as hard as the previous one, but it is infectious. I know I will listen to this CD for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums EVER. A Slam Dunk, August 16, 2006
This review is from: Sugar (Audio CD)
This cd didn't leave my cd player for nearly a year. Every single song is solid as a rock. And not one of them sounds the same as the next. Stand out for me is the title track. You know how there are always songs you skip over on cds? Not on this one. Would buy it again and again. Miss you, Tonic.

4.0 out of 5 stars possibly even better than the first cd.........., November 20, 1999

I have listened to Tonic ever since they first came out. I saw them in concert w/ the Goo Goo Dolls and they rocked! When i first got it, I had Lemon Parade in my player all the time, because that is the CD w/ one of their most popular songs "If you could only see" on it and that has to be one of my favorite songs. I still listen to that CD constantly. Well, this CD may possibly be better then Lemon Parade. I enjoy all the songs on it and I would encourage anyone who took interest in their last CD to go out and buy this one. P.S.- "You wanted more" is one of my favorite songs ever, Tonic rules!

If you liked Tonic's debut album "Lemon Parade", you may find "Sugar" too sweet for your tastes. As with a lot of rock bands, such as the Replacements and Everclear, it seems the progression of time takes Tonic further away from its rock beginnings.

Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable album, especially if you like hook-laden classic rock pop (and I do). But there is nothing here with the guts of "Wicked Soldier" or "Casual Affair." In fact, the hardest song on the album is the hit "You Wanted More", which is hardly rockin'.

As much as I find the album pleasant, I was looking for something harder and more ambitious considering Tonic's excellent debut. The band's next album will let us all know whether they really can rock or if they've taken the definitive turn up popsong boulevard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tonic is HIGHLY and boy do I mean HIGHLY under-rated, November 5, 2002
This review is from: Sugar (Audio CD)
This CD is simply amazing. I've been listening to this album off and on for the past year and every time I listen to it, it gets better and better. These guys have way more talent than a lot of newer band out there. Tonic makes Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd look like imbeciles. Every song is just great; I can't say anything bad about any song.
Highlights: Well every one of them and I'm not just saying that. I can listen to this CD all day on repeat.

4.0 out of 5 stars High doses of Sugar recommended., September 5, 2001

Rarely has such a radio friendly band produced work of such consistent quality but make no mistake Tonic are a rare group. Their second record "Sugar" is a magnificent example of slick grooves and restrained ballads that will have you singing and tapping your feet in no time. Indeed the first track "Future says run" will get you straight in the game with its forceful guitars and big backbeat. The trend continues from there with the absolute rock 'n' roll of "Knock Down Walls" and "Stronger than mine" contrasting with sincere and haunting ballads ,"Waiting for the light to change" and "Waltz with me". The playing is tight with plenty of momentum but what really sets Tonic apart from the majority of progressive rockers is the song writing of Emerson Hart who consistently produces memorable hooks combined with simple and engaging lyrics. An excellent album from a band with a big future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best rock album of the year, June 12, 2000
This review is from: Sugar (Audio CD)
I just watched Tonic at the Rock im park festival in Nuremberg, Germany. Opening for Matchbox 20, Counting Crows, Live and Pearl Jam they just did a brilliant job. Just as brilliant as SUGAR, their 2nd album, which is even better then LEMON PARADE. Tonic prove to be more then a one-album-wonder. Straight melodic rock makes SUGAR one of the years best albums so far. Sorry Pearl Jam and BINAURAL, sorry Rob Thomas and MAD SEASON by Matchbox 20, SUGAR is just one step ahead. As Tonic was in Germany, rocking the park.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tonic Does It Again - It's Actually Possible..., April 19, 2000

After basically burning out Lemon-Parade in my CD player by listening to it for thousands of hours, I came to the conclusion that even a band as great as Tonic will NEVER EVER be able to follow up such an album.

I'm glad I was wrong.

Sugar is just as good, and in many cases, better then Lemon-Parade. This band does an amazing job with their lyrics, style, and music in general!

This (and Lemon Parade) is one of the only CDs I ever bought that I listen to EVERY TRACK over and over again!

This CD is worth every penny. Just buy it.
