5.0 out of 5 stars Works great October 26, 2011
By D Rosen
The silly named SugarSync works very well. I've used five different providers (DropBox - fewer features, Gladninet - slow and clunky, SkyDrive - no local drive, GoDaddy Online File Folder - horribly slow, Google Docs - no local drive but nicest browser experience). SugarSync is the best of them all. It works exactly as they advertised. It uses its own file explorer rather instead of the Windows Explorer but it is fast. The icons clearly indicate that they are being backed up, then they are successfully backed up. It has not errored once, which the others have; imagine getting an error when saving or accessing one of your critical files or photos in the cloud. Kind of makes me nervous.
On the downside, SugarSync does not provide ability to locally encrypt your files with a private key before uploading. They say they store your files encrypted but they are unclear on what encryption they use and they manage the keys meaning anyone with access to those keys can see your files. Secondly, SugarSync is one of the more expensive options if you require a lot of storage space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Hate Relationship - Eats my Battery October 27, 2011
I have a free account with Dropbox, and a paid account with SugarSync. So, I use both frequently for different files. SugarSync gives me more free space, more configuration options to organize files the way I want, and cheaper paid plans, which is why I like them for the bulk of my sync'ing needs.

Unfortunately, while I have no complaints with the desktop versions so far, this Android version does have one eats through my ASUS Transformer tablet's battery taking me from 3 days of light use to 1 day if I'm lucky...and that's with it only auto-syncing once an hour. I don't know how often Dropbox syncs, but I leave it running and it does not eat up my battery like that. Fortunately, they apparently know of this problem and at least give you a setting in the SugarSync menu to change how often auto-sync runs, and/or to make it only sync when plugged in, which is what I chose. Once I made that change, my battery life instantly went back to ~3 days.

If you do a lot of file activity that needs constant sync'ing with your tablet or phone and 2GB is enough space for you, or you don't mind Dropbox's prices and one-folder setup, then I'd recommend Dropbox. Otherwise, this is a great app...just remember to change your auto-sync options to save your battery's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Software May 6, 2011
Verified Purchase
This is a FANTASTIC piece of software. A must if you want your documents, pictures, etc. portable. Automatically backs up pics from phone. Gives you 2.5x the space of dropbox and has more functionality. Just as easy to use as dropbox. Makes shifting smart phones easier too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Customer Support October 1, 2013
I loved this product while I used it, but I switched over to Google Drive months ago. Today, I received a bill from them for this years service. I had forgotten I still had an account! I cancelled my account, but they will not provide a refund! I couldn't reach anyone by phone, then through a text chat with a support rep and their supervisor, was told that their corporate policy is no refunds. So if you do sign up with them, make sure you proactively cancel when you're done, otherwise you'll be paying for the next year!

1.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful, Read the Details February 1, 2014
If you think you can cancel anytime you want, they are counting on the fact that you wont read the fine print. I signed up because they sent me an email stating a half price offer, when I signed up I found out there was not, so I immediately tried to cancel. Unfortunately for me, and I did not read the whole agreement, not sure if many people do, but you are stuck with it for the whole year with no refund whatsoever. Customer service just says "Too Bad, Its in the Terms" After much unhappy chatting back and forth, they finally said I could have an extra 6 months added and that I should have not gotten the email, but I practically had to pull teeth to get anything. Anyone that uses the ploy of not giving refunds does so for a reason, I think you can figure it out. Just thought you should know

2.0 out of 5 stars CAREFUL! Files are easily lost May 6, 2012
I've used Sugarsync for 5 months now and have just abandoned it. It worked OK to start with but has not been reliable - even from a home computer rather than just a phone.

It has failed to update files without any reason, or in some cases never backed them up at all (despite the badge showing it as 'backed up'). This has resulted in work time being wasted and work lost. Also, on some computers it won't let me access my files at all.

I've got a lot of valuable files (in work terms) and sugarsync has lost or not backed up information too often. When i've encountered problems that I coldn't solve using the help files and gone to 'email help' they have NEVER replied (!).

I would recommend you only use this for files that are not very important - or go somewhere else.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too automatic July 28, 2013
It looked like a great deal, the reviews were positive. I bought 100 GB storage. I used SS for a couple of months and totally abandoned it for full file back ups. I still use it to access a few files that I access daily to keep track of health related data, which it works great for, but stopped using it for a cloud backup to my files.

A couple of months ago when I was wanting to sync my existing master files that were on my other older desktop to a new computer, SS sync'd the files. But instead of sync'ing the master files from my older desk top to the new computer, the files from the new computer, which had no files, overwrote my master files on my desktop and the cloud. Sygarsync automatically determined the files on the new computer were newer and deleted master files and folder structure on my desktop and on the SugarSync cloud. I had two other hard drives automatically backing up the master desk top, they too were overwritten after SS deleted the master files. Twenty five years of small business files were gone, I freaked out, even cried!

FORTUNATELY, I was able to find a back up that I had hidden. I contacted SS about it, they were very slow with help. They tried to restore the lost files, but only the files were restored, less the sub-directories. The 150,000+ files in 15,000+ folders were restored in two or three folders with none of the original folder directories.

Sugarcync is too automatic, and was obviously too confusing to ME. Yes, I probably screwed up, but the SS interface left me lost is cyber space. I've been using computers since the DOS days in 1987. For backups I instead bought a Synology network attached home server from Amazon with two hard drives.
